CENTER NEWS

With the start of a new school year, changes in household routines can leave family pets feeling a little lost. Dogs and cats often struggle with separation anxiety as the once-busy home suddenly quiets during school hours.

Easing the transition shouldn’t take much — just a little compassion and creativity. Try leaving out items with a familiar scent, like an unwashed shirt, for comfort while you’re gone. Keep their minds busy with puzzle feeders or interactive toys to help prevent boredom.

Before heading out the door, a morning walk or play session can help burn off extra energy so they’re more likely to nap while the house is quiet, and when the kids get home, encourage 30 minutes of quality time with the dog to rebuild the connection. Most importantly, stay positive and patient — no scolding for accidents or anxious behavior. Pets, just like people, need time to adjust, and your love and understanding will go a long way in helping them settle into this new school-year groove!

PET TIPS

New Pet, New Journey: A Guide to Starting Strong

Just adopted? Bringing home a new pet is an exciting adventure! Set them up for success with these helpful tips:

  • Create a calm, safe space, like a cozy corner or quiet room, where they can settle comfortably.
  • Schedule a vet visit soon after adoption to check their health, update vaccinations, and discuss any special care needs.
  • Follow the 3-3-3 rule when introducing new pets to people and other pets: Monitor your pet’s adjustment over the first three days, three weeks, and three months. Introduce people and other pets gradually with supervision to ease stress and build trust and positive associations.

The Power of Routine: Establishing Daily Care and Exercise

Consistent training sessions and quiet downtime help pets understand expectations and feel secure. Support your pet’s health by establishing a daily routine:

  • Feed your pet at the same times daily to regulate digestion and foster security.
  • Schedule bathroom breaks for dogs at predictable intervals — first thing in the morning, after meals, and before bedtime.
  • Provide at least two active play sessions or walks daily, adjusting length and intensity based on pet’s age, breed, and energy level.
  • Provide cats with toys that mimic natural hunting behaviors for mental and physical stimulation.

SUCCESS STORIES

Our former resident Gemma has undergone an amazing transformation thanks to our rescue partnership with Tennessee K9 Haven, who stepped in to care for this sweet girl. Now thriving, Gemma has made huge strides in confidence, learns quickly with praise and affection, and loves her harness, car rides, and clean bedding days.

We’re proud to collaborate with dedicated rescue groups to give animals with special needs or extended shelter stays a second chance. If you’re a licensed nonprofit with a valid Georgia Department of Agriculture license, consider partnering with us to provide essential care and help find forever homes for these deserving pets.

HELPING HANDS

County celebrates its fosters and volunteers

We couldn’t do what we do without our pet-loving friends! In July, we celebrated the dedicated individuals who give their time, heart, and home to support the animals in our care — from bottle-feeding kittens and walking dogs to lending a hand at events — during our Foster and Volunteer Appreciation Night.

We’re so grateful for their compassion, commitment, and the community they’ve helped us build.

Kicking off the new school year — paws and all!

We hitched up our trailer for the County’s Back to School Bash in July — a celebration that brings families together to kick off the new school year. Our staff engaged with families throughout this fun community event, sharing valuable pet safety tips and resources to help ensure pets thrive as the school year begins.
