What do you get when you mix the BYSC 3rd Annual 3X3 Adult Basketball Tournament fundraiser with another community cause? Double the fun, sweat and lots of donated sneakers for a win/win day of sports, community engagement and funding.

On April 19, BYSC held its 3rd Annual 3X3 Adult Basketball Tournament at Purchase College with over 130 participants playing to raise funds for our special needs and underserved youth sports programs.

This year, Scarsdale High School students Leah Glucksman, Liza Brecker, Willow Malsch, Jilly Mehlman and Haley Sontag collected boxes of sneakers that day to help their cause, “Dunk Your Kicks” while cheering on Leah’s dad, Adam Glucksman, a 3 year veteran of the 3X3 Tournament. “I got the idea from my Dad”, says Leah. “Seeing him give back in his own way, I was just trying to find mine”. Each pair of sneakers donated reaps $1 to help fight pediatric cancer.

The BYSC event, with lead sponsor Cushman and Wakefield, raised over $40,000. It was truly a perfect pairing of community engagement opportunity.

Coach's Corner
With Danny Bernstein

We submitted a new budget at our spring board meeting. I am amazed at the ability of individuals on our board to understand the inner workings of the organization through the lens of numbers.

I for one always struggled with math in school. This is not to say that I disrespect dollars or the importance of maintaining competent financial records and standards. Ask Beth, my wife, I still save my change and place all the coins in rolls which I deposit in the bank! Although the sports world draws its life blood from scores and statistics, I have always been reluctant to portray our work in numeric figures.

BYSC Partnership with Sound Shore Indoor Tennis Club
on Solid Footing for 2nd Year
backyard sports and soccerFriday nights can be tricky after a long work week or shuttling your own kids to sports programs. So when BYSC entered into a partnership with Sound Shore Indoor Tennis to run a comprehensive clinic for over 65 underserved kids throughout the county, Scarsdale mom Terry Gushner came to volunteer with her son Eli, but wasn’t sure where this would all lead. “I love tennis and wanted to give back, but had no idea how attached to the kids I would become. Instead of feeling tired from a long week, I come home after playing with these kids and feel light and energized”. Terry is now in her second year teaching and mentoring the kids and tells us, it is the highlight of her week.
