Supporting Marylanders Experiencing Back to School Anxiety

The beginning of the school year is a time of major transitions for many people and can be very exciting. But for others, heading back to college can cause anxiety for a variety of reasons, such as being separated from support systems, a fear of the unknown, and even peer pressure. Pro Bono Counseling’s WARMLine is a free and confidential mental health resource available to support Marylanders experiencing such life changes.

One student returning to college recently contacted the WARMLine due to concerns about their ability to succeed. They explained that they had failed several classes the previous year due to symptoms of anxiety and depression. As a first-generation college student, the caller also noted experiencing stress because, while their parents were encouraging of their studies, they were unsure how to practically assist them in navigating this new environment.

Meet Pro Bono Counseling's New Interns

The start of a new school year means new volunteer interns with Pro Bono Counseling. The following students will fulfill fundamental roles with the organization as interns as they work to complete their degrees. Please join us in welcoming them!

Clinical Graduate Intern

  • Marcela Carbajal is currently pursuing an MA in Mental Health Counseling at Adams State University in Colorado. Marcela will conduct client intakes in both English and Spanish and completing other clinical tasks. Marcela previously volunteered with PBC through her internship, and we are excited that she will be continuing with PBC in this new role.

Clinical Undergraduate Interns

  • Lucy Barger attends the University of Richmond and is a Psychology major and Biology minor.
  • Olivia Williams is a Psychology major at University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

As Clinical Interns, Lucy and Olivia present client cases to volunteer clinicians, notify clients about clinician information, and conduct follow-up calls.

Outreach Intern

  • Tali Brown is majoring in Sociology and Social Welfare with a minor in Public Policy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tali interned with PBC over the summer and is continuing her internship through the fall semester. As an outreach intern, Tali attends outreach events, assists with volunteer recruitment and enrollment, and updates contact information.
