The Marvels of May
Nǐ hǎo! Néih hóu! Xin chào! Sabaidi! Kumusta? Hello, partners and friends!

May has unfolded as a month of magnificence for our teams. While some of us dove back into the bustling schedule of trade events around the world, others have been immersing in and creating captivating adventures that offer new perspectives on our destinations.

We are thrilled to introduce some of our new products and reintroduce beloved favorites that invite you to take a second look into destinations you thought you already knew. Led by our passionate General Managers and Managing Directors across China, the Philippines, Laos and Hong Kong, these experiences aim to foster authentic journeys and intimate moments that would surprise even the most seasoned traveler.

Also this month, we are elated to share that we were awarded and nominated for various categories in this year's World Travel Awards! We are very grateful to receive these recognitions, which are a testament to the support of our clients and partners, and we are all the more inspired to continue crafting extraordinary experiences for your clients.
China
In China, our Managing Director Fan Zhang shares the beauty of embarking on an adventure through time and history. While the country's rich history is usually experienced through its ancient and iconic structures, travellers can also embark on an expansive journey along the Ancient Silk Road, which offers an exploration of China’s past through its unique natural wonders. He further explains, “Our exclusive 20 to 30 day expedition from Xian to Urumqi is made for real adventurers: it spans over 2,500 kilometers of captivating landscapes and cultural marvels, making it one of our most comprehensive journeys. Each mile unveils new wonders and surprises, promising an unforgettable odyssey filled with discovery and intrigue.”

A distinctive pivotal stop is at Zhangye Danxia, a national park known for its spectacular display of colours across hills and rock formations. Nestled in the heart of the Hexi Corridor of Gansu Province, this ancient natural wonder, predating the Jurassic period, is a result of sandstone and mineral deposits made over 24 million years ago.

Within the national park is a recently discovered hidden gem — the Qilian Mountains Landform Group. Located at the northern foot of the Qilian Mountains, this breathtaking landscape stretches over 300 square kilometres. Your guests can explore the wonders of this lesser-known area, where shapes of red sandstone create vibrant colours and awe-inspiring rock formations -- a concrete example of how nature's artistry truly knows no bounds.
Other captivating attractions along the Silk Road journey include the Jiayuguan Pass, celebrated as the western endpoint of the Great Wall. It was used as a strategic military fortification and a vital trading post along the Silk Road, offering insight on the warfare and mercantile genius of ancient China. The awe-inspiring Singing Hill in Mingsha Sand Dunes is called as such because of its natural acoustic phenomenon occurring due to the friction between sand grains, generating a resonant, humming sound that can range from a soft whisper to a loud roar. And the mysterious landscape of Kumul Yadan Geological Park, home to the enigmatic "Devil City," is the largest Yadan geomorphic area with eerie formations of wind-eroded rocks that resemble ancient city ruins and fantastical creatures.

Reflecting on this experience, Fan remarks, “The Silk Road is a gift that keeps on giving. With the right and well-curated itinerary, one can truly and fully immerse in the rich and diverse experiences of the Silk Road.”
Philippines
With its 7,641 islands, the Philippines beckons travellers to embark on a journey of rediscovery, unveiling the country as a land of captivating folklore amidst its iconic landscapes. General Manager Gregor Zajc shares his perspective, stating, "While our nation is known for its stunning white beaches, our cultural heritage is equally remarkable, woven with fascinating tales and oral histories that come alive when experienced firsthand at their places of origin."

Enter the Mayon Volcano Exploration — an immersive experience tailored for travellers with a penchant for folklore. Mayon is an active volcano located in the province of Albay in Bicol Region. It is renowned for its almost perfect symmetrical cone shape, which is considered the world's most perfectly formed volcano.

Beyond its geological splendour, the volcano stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of legends passed down through generations by the local community. One such story: in the 1700s, two churches, the renowned Cagsawa Church and the lesser-known Daraga Church, graced the vicinity of the majestic volcano. Positioned atop a hill, Daraga Church miraculously survived the catastrophic eruption of 1814, contrasting with the fate of Cagsawa Church. Legend suggests a divine intervention or prescient planning, as Daraga Church emerged as a sanctuary and place of worship amidst the disaster. Guests can witness these stories come to life while looking at an insightful painting inside the church, vividly illustrating the tales as they are recounted by the tour guides.

Another legend is that of Mayon's iconic cone shape. It stands as a monument to the enduring tale of Magayon and Ulap, immortalised in the very landscape itself. As travellers venture through the region, our seasoned guides weave captivating narratives of star-crossed lovers, jealous rivals and the indomitable human spirit against the backdrop of this awe-inspiring natural marvel.
Yet, the allure of Mayon transcends its folklore; it also symbolises the resilience and creativity of the Filipino people in keeping their heritage. Our expedition offers an immersive dive into local culture, with opportunities for hands-on engagement such as abaca weaving demonstrations led by Albay's own artisans. Abaca is a fiber made from a banana plant, which is extracted, dried, and woven to create many things, from clothes to shoes and accessories, and even beautiful decorative items.

And with additional explorations to the serene shores of Sumlang Lake and the bustling streets of Albay, this meticulously curated experience provides a comprehensive glimpse into the essence of Bicol. Gregor concludes, "Ultimately, we want this experience to be a journey of personal discovery; honouring the legends, landscapes, and legacy that make the Mayon Volcano and heritage of the locals living around it a true national treasure.”
Laos
Venturing westward, our General Manager in Laos, Guilhem Cavaillé, is on a mission to reintroduce a favourite that showcases the country as a destination in its own right. He eagerly expresses, “We want to give adventure seekers and explorers a journey like no other. We want them to leave the ordinary tours behind and spice up their exploration with a unique scooter ride in South Laos, offering a real off-the-beaten-path twist, allowing them to immerse in the authentic charm of remote villages, untouched landscapes and captivating local cultures.”

This adventure is called Backroads Scooter Ride from Champasak to the 4,000 Islands. The full-day excursion promises an unforgettable experience as travellers traverse the scenic backroads of the Si Phan Don region, connecting two of Laos's must-visit destinations in style.

The excursion begins at a charming town south of Champasak, where a friendly crew of scooter drivers awaits. Guests will hop on behind their local drivers and embark on a thrilling journey through earthen pathways, winding along the Mekong River and across remote local villages. This river supports the largest inland fishery in the world, providing livelihoods and sustenance for millions of people across diverse communities. Along the way, guests will have the opportunity to interact with these communities and experience their way of life firsthand. As they venture along the least-travelled paths of the region, they'll encounter bumpy terrain, waterway crossings, and narrow bridges, offering a true taste of adventure in open nature.
After, they will head for Don Khong Island, the gateway to the 4,000 Island region. Upon arrival, travellers will indulge in a delicious riverside lunch at a local restaurant. After bidding farewell to their scooter drivers, guests will embark on a traditional longtail boat cruise to Don Det Island, soaking in the stunning scenery along the way. Next, they will transfer through the narrow lanes from Don Det to Don Khone Islands on a traditional remork-tuk-tuk.

The day concludes on a high note — by soaring over the majestic Liphi Falls and the river with the brand-new zipline system, providing a perfect ending to an unforgettable adventure. Guilhem says in conclusion, “May this immersive journey serve as a testament to the beauty and charm of Laos as a standalone destination, inspiring a deeper connection to its captivating cultures and natural wonders.”
Hong Kong
Over in Hong Kong, our Commercial Director Richard Willis excitedly announces an experience that transcends the usual thoroughfares of food trips and shopping. Introducing Hollywood Road, which has just been titled as the "Second Coolest Road in the World" by Time Out magazine.

This 180-year-old road isn’t showing any signs of ageing at all. In fact, a traverse along its bohemian alleys unveils its rich heritage and culture in a hip and stylish manner. He adds, “What better way to explore this trendy locale than with our walking tours? In a city where expenses are on the rise, a leisurely stroll through art, history and culture is not only enriching but also budget-friendly.”
Chosen for its unique blend of old and new, art and culture, local gastronomy and pandemic-era community spirit, Hollywood Road offers an ever-evolving character for all things cool. Some highlights of the walking tour include a stop at the Tai Kwun (Former Central Police Station), where guests can explore the historical heritage buildings and immerse in many stories behind this iconic landmark. A visit to Man Mo Temple offers not only tranquillity in the middle of a bustling city, but also an enriched experience of travelling back in time as it is the oldest temple on Hong Kong Island. The former Police Married Quarters (PMQ), now transformed into a vibrant arts and design venue, is perfect for art lovers as it showcases the creativity of local artisans. Lastly, there is also Cat Street where one can wander through a charming lane lined with vendors selling antiques, art and souvenirs — perfect for finding unique treasures to take home.

Beyond the excursion, the road offers many more art hubs, antique shops, art galleries, and Instagram-worthy murals awaiting to be discovered, which are especially lively during Arts Month. Richard says in conclusion, "Exploring Hollywood Road is like stepping into a treasure trove of culture and creativity. It's not just about what you see; it's about the stories behind each landmark, each artwork and each hidden gem. Whether you're a history buff, an art enthusiast, or simply someone who loves to wander and discover, Hollywood Road has something for everyone.”
