Dr. Siddiqui Awarded GEMSSTAR R03 to Study Microbiome and Aging
Dr. Nazema Siddiqui
was recently awarded the NIH GEMSSTAR R03 to study how the microbiome changes with age, and to identify factors related to recurrent UTIs in older women. Dr. Siddiqui’s multi-disciplinary research team includes co-investigators in bioinformatics and computational biology and statistics, and she’ll be working with third-year urogynecology fellow
Monique Vaughan, MD.
The GEMSSTAR is a 2 year award that is designed for medical and surgical specialists who want to transition to aging research. As such, there is a professional development and mentoring plan to facilitate and enhance knowledge in studies of aging populations. Dr. Siddiqui’s professional development plan is co-funded by the Duke Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC) through their Research Education Career Development Award;
Drs. Cindy Amundsen
and
Kenneth Schmader
will serve as co-mentors for the GEMSSTAR and career development award.

Dr. Previs Awarded AAOGF GOG Scholarship to Study Immune Modulation in Ovarian Cancer
|
Dr. Rebecca Previs
was recently awarded the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Foundation (AAOGF) and Gynecologic Oncology Foundation (GOG) Scholarship Award. Working with the mentorship of
Dr. Donald McDonnell
, Chairman of Duke Pharmacology & Cancer Biology, the award will commence on July 1, 2019. The treatment of ovarian cancer includes a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Although the majority of women initially respond to treatment, the likelihood of cancer progressing remains high. When this occurs, physicians treat patients with chemotherapy with modest success rates. An urgent need exists to treat ovarian cancer patients with better, lifesaving options when our current therapies are not enough.

Dr. Hughes Awarded NIH R21 to Study the Clinical and Viral Characteristics of CMV in Seropositive Pregnant Women
|
Dr. Brenna Hughes
was recently awarded an
investigator-initiated R21 grant
by the NIH National Institute of Child & Human Development (NICHD) to continue her research in cytomegalovirus (CMV), the most common congenital viral infection in pregnancy. Affecting approximately 0.4-1% of live born infants, congenital CMV can cause stillbirth and newborn death, or severe morbidity in the form of cognitive and motor delay, and most commonly, significant, progressive hearing loss. While classically teaching has been that primary maternal CMV infection is associated with congenital infection, a relatively large proportion of congenital infections result from maternal reinfection or re-activation in highly seropositive populations.
