We value the views of our parents. Would you be willing to take a 3 question survey to help the PTA?
We appreciate your insights.
|
Did you know?
|
Did you know that our Principal, Mrs. Maddux conducts quarterly "Chat with the Principals"? These are open forum, casual opportunities to listen to the plans for the school and inquire about things that matter to you. This year Mrs. Maddux is also offering an open invitation to parents to tour classrooms after each Chat with the Principal. Though the expectation is that you not disrupt the learning of your own child by going into their classroom, it gives you a chance to experience other classroom environments. Want to know what the other grade level teachers are doing? Have you heard about the exciting lessons in another classroom? Are you curious what next year will be like? You are invited to spend a few moments quietly observing classroom learning after each "Chat". This is an fantastic opportunity to see our amazing staff doing what they do best.

Grandparents Lunches
|
I would like to send out a Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who were able to attend our Grandparent's lunch. The children really seemed to enjoy this special time spent with their families during their lunch. I also would like to thank all of our parent volunteers that helped to make the lunches run as smoothly as possible.: Barletta Underwood, Melissa Olson, Jen Straka, Lisa Wells, Amy Swicord, Kendal Fox, Leslie Kekelis, Angela Morrell, Lindsey Fournier, Kathie Elfersy, Erika Harper, Margaret Bramlett, Gina Jones and Sally Brainard. Thank you for making this event successful.
I would also like to send out a big Thank You to MudStain Sally for donating our black tableclothes that adorned the tables at the Grandparent's lunches. We are very excited to continue to use them at future events!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Allen

She is the mother of Peyton who is in 3rd Grade in Mrs. Tyson's Class and Chloe who is in 2nd grade in Mrs. McCarthy's Class and both are at Discovery School. She grew up in the Nashville area when she was in elementary school but moved to multiple states like Texas, Virginia and Georgia for high school, college and dental school. She moved back to Murfreesboro in 2007. Amy is a pediatric dentist here in Murfreesboro at Dr. Amy Pediatric Dentistry. She is enjoying being apart of this community and especially Discovery School. Chili Cook Off
|
Now that we are back from break, the Chili Cook-Off is right around the corner! The date will be
Monday, October 24th from 5:30 - 7:30pm. This year's theme is
Pirates to coincide with the Book Fair also going on that week. We will be sending home forms for you to pre-purchase your food tickets the Monday before the event. Please be sure to get those in to your teachers by Friday Oct. 21st to ensure we purchase enough food! Room moms will be getting in touch with the classrooms to decide who will cook the chili & decorate the table for each room. As in previous years, there will be one entry into the cook-off from each classroom. Then, our esteemed judges will choose which classes win! Thanks in advance for making this one of Discovery Schools favorite events! We can't wait to see the creativity flow & taste all of delicious chili!

CHARACTER WORD OF THE MONTH -
Our Character Word for October is COURAGE. The definition we will use is: Being brave enough to do what you should, even when you are afraid.
October is BULLYING PREVENTION month. In class meetings we will be defining what bullying is and how it adversely affects people. We will be reviewing our school's rules against bullying, and encouraging our students to have the COURAGE to be Defenders of those who may feel excluded or "different".
Murfreesboro City Schools' Definition of Bullying (from Olweus): A person is bullied when he/she is exposed repeatedly and over time to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he/she has difficulty defending himself/herself.
MCS' Rules Against Bullying (from Olweus):
1.) We will not bully others
2.) We will try to help students who are being bullied
3.) We will try to include students who are left out
4.) If we know that someone is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home
SAFETY SOCIAL! We switched Career Week and Safety Social; so this year our Safety Social is October 14th. Students will meet and greet with members of the safety community in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County during their Special Area time on Friday October 14th
October is also SOCKtober!!! - Our BIONIC Team is collecting socks for kids in need. They will announce this project in our first October Monday Meeting. Our goal is 800 pairs of socks.
SOCK WEEK! The BIONIC Team has come up with these fun days to help create awareness:
Monday the 17th - Crazy Socks
Tuesday the 18th - Tall Socks
Wednesday the 19th - Mismatched Socks
Thursday the 20th - Sports Socks
Friday the 21st - NO Socks (BIONIC Team wanted students to experience what it's like to not have socks)
