Inscription to Randolph in the New Testament from Winston Churchill's Chancellor of the Exchequer oath, #1979.22.1

A Father's Legacy: Churchill, Fatherhood, and Tribute Through Words

When Winston was offered the role of Chancellor of the Exchequer, he replied "This fulfills my ambition. I still have my father's robe as Chancellor. I shall be proud to serve you in this splendid Office."

Shortly after taking the oath of office on November 6, 1924, he gifted the New Testament he had been sworn in upon to his own son, Randolph.

Winston and Randolph both had complicated relationships with their fathers, but their respect is evident in the detailed biographies they each wrote about their fathers.

In 1946, in the wake of the Allies winning World War II, Sir Winston Churchill came to the US and gave his famous (and famously cautionary) "Iron Curtain" speech at a small college in Mid-Missouri.

That school, Westminster College, is the home of America's National Churchill Museum, which celebrates the life, work, thought, and leadership of the "British Bulldog."

How does a museum dedicated to the man who saved Western liberal democracy endeavor to stay relevant at a moment when, around the world, democracy itself seems endangered? Our guest is Timothy Riley, Director and Chief Curator of this museum.

Support the Churchill Fund

As we approach the end of the Museum's fiscal year on June 30, we recognize and reflect upon another successful year at America's National Churchill Museum.

Our ability to promote the understanding of Winston Churchill's legacy for future generations is bolstered by generous support to The Churchill Fund. Each of us here remains grateful for the many thousands of members, Churchill Fellows, visitors, and friends who have made an investment in the future or our inspiring history.

Understanding the past—and the continued relevance of Winston Churchill in the present—can be a key to making sense of today’s world, a world where increasingly there is less understanding of history and its lasting consequences.

So, our work is not yet done.

I hope you will join me before June 30 in making an additional gift to The Churchill Fund. Your support is a vital resource that helps us inspire teachers, students, and lifelong learners—while preserving the enduring legacy of Winston Churchill.

As Churchill famously said in 1941, "Give us the tools, and we will finish the job."
