Shorthand Secrets and

"The Sinews of Peace"

Although widely referred to as the "Iron Curtain" Speech, Winston Churchill originally titled his address at Westminster College on March 5, 1946, something else.

Churchill's message from Missouri to the world centered on his goal of preventing future conflict by creating strong alliances against what he described as "two gaunt marauders—war and tyranny."

The near-final draft of the speech, written in verse style and preserved by ANCM, shows last-minute revisions, including the addition of Churchill’s chosen title, which was captured in shorthand by his secretary, Jo Sturdee:

"There is the solution which I respectfully offer to you in this address to which I have given the title The Sinews of Peace."
