The program offers TWO levels of state-wide recognition:


Regional level: State Board of Education District Teachers of the Year


State level: Ohio Teacher of the Year


There are 11 regional State Board District Teachers of the Year who move forward as candidates for selection to serve as the Ohio Teacher of the Year.

Step 1: Consider Who to Nominate!

Ohio’s most prestigious and long-standing teacher recognition program annually identifies exceptional teachers and celebrates their effective, inspiring work both inside and outside the classroom. The program also offers educators professional growth opportunities and gives them voices as leaders and advocates for public education.

Candidates under consideration for Ohio Teacher of the Year must:


  • Hold a valid Ohio Professional Teaching License or a Career Technical Teaching License;


  • Be currently completing their tenth year or more of teaching;


  • Be employed full-time in a state-approved public school, community school or career-technical center.



  • Work directly with students at least 50 percent of the time;


  • Have received no previous Ohio Teacher of the Year recognition; and



  • Plan to continue in active teaching status.

Step 2: Complete a Nomination Survey!

  • School administrators, colleagues, community members, parents or students may submit a nomination


  • Multiple teachers may be nominated from the same district or school building. (Self-nominations are not accepted.)


  • The nomination survey takes ONLY 10-15 minutes to complete

Step 3: Nominee Review/Application Process!

The Territory Lead for the State Board of Education District and the State Coordinator will receive nomination information and invite each qualified nominee to submit an Ohio Teacher of the Year application for review.
