Issue #4 | Spring 2019
President’s Message

Dear District 2 Members:

This is my first official letter as President of District 2 ASNA. What an honor to be in this position! We have an outstanding group of nurses in our district and my hope is that we will be able to be more inclusive in our meetings and initiatives. I would like to have a representative from each county to volunteer to be a contact person for me to reach out to that county. This representative would be on the Board of Directors for District 2 for one year – ending with Convention. If you go to our web page in the ASNA Page, you will find our Calendar of Events for 2019.

I apologize for the lack of a Winter Newsletter. Time of transition and learning so just did not get it done. Happens at times. You can always go to our Web Page to see any updates available.

Please let me know any way that I can help you personally or your county as we march through this new year!

Sincerely,
Mary Beth Bodin
President District 2 ASNA

Devotional

Today’s devotional is excerpted from A Charles Dickens Devotional, beginning with this selection from The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby:

It was, by this time, within an hour of noon, and although a dense vapour still enveloped the city they had left, as if the very breath of its busy people hung over their schemes of gain and profit, and found greater attraction there than in the quiet region above, in the open country it was clear and fair. Occasionally, in some low spots they came upon patches of mist which the sun had not yet driven from their strongholds; but these were soon passed, and as they laboured up the hills beyond, it was pleasant to look down, and see how the sluggish mass rolled heavily off, before the cheering influence of day. A broad, fine, honest sun lighted up the green pastures and dimpled water with the semblance of summer, while it left the travellers all the invigorating freshness of that early time of year. The ground seemed elastic under their feet. . . .

The day wore on, and all these bright colours subsided, and assumed a quieter tint, like young hopes softened down by time, or youthful features by degrees resolving into the calm and serenity of age. But they were scarcely less beautiful in their slow decline, than they had been in their prime; for nature gives to every time and season some beauties of its own; and from morning to night, as from the cradle to the grave, is but a succession of changes so gentle and easy, that we can scarcely mark their progress.

Condolences
Spring is usually a time of rebirth. Even as we celebrate this time, we also honor and celebrate those who have gone home during this season.
District 2 ASNA would like to take this time to honor and celebrate the following lives and offer our prayers and condolences to the families involved. If there are others, please excuse our omission and know that we are here for you.
I would ask that we each take a moment of our time in silence as we pray for the victims of the recent tornado and the families involved in the devastation.
Please pray for
the family of Ellen Cockrel

Homemade Churned Vanilla Ice Cream
What you'll need:
  • 1-1/2 cups milk
  • 1-1/2 cups heavy cream, divided
  • 1 vanilla bean
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 1 cup sugar
  • Pinch of kosher or sea salt

Instructions:
  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk, 3⁄4 cup cream, and vanilla bean. Cook until bubbles form on the sides of the pan. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks until light and frothy; gradually add the sugar and salt, whisking until blended. Add 1 cup of the hot milk mixture, whisking until blended; pour the mixture into the saucepan.
  3. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture coats a spoon. (The mixture should register 175° on an instant-read thermometer. Do not let it boil). Stir in the remaining cream. Place the saucepan in a bowl of ice water and allow it to cool, stirring occasionally. Pour the mixture through a wire-mesh strainer into a bowl. (At this point, you can cover and chill the mixture 4 hours or up to 3 days.) Process in an ice-cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
