February 2026

Notes from Commissioner Blubaugh:

As you know, February is the shortest month of the year, but it also felt like one of the BUSIEST, with great events and meetings all over District 2! I had several chances to collaborate with my counterparts on the Wichita City Council - most notably, by helping to break ground on the Wichita Police Department's West Substation, next to Northwest High School. This site provides the perfect opportunity to introduce students to careers in law enforcement and public service. I'm excited to watch the construction take shape!

City and county leaders met with the business community at the Wichita Chamber of Commerce Chairman's Luncheon. I take special pride in congratulating Gabe Schlickau for serving as Chairman the same year I am Chairman of the Sedgwick County Commission. We both have roots in Danville, Kansas, in Harper County and even belonged to the same 4-H club growing up! Must be something in the water...

I also joined Wichita City Councilman Dalton Glasscock at his recent town hall forum, where we discussed the Maple Street expansion in 2027, West Kellogg improvements, and the groundbreaking of a new fire station at Pawnee and Maize Road. These exciting developments benefit all of us in southwest Sedgwick County as well!

Some other big events in February included the 81st meeting of the Sedgwick County Conservation District, where my daughter attended as part of Future Farmers of America (FFA). I also visited the Wichita Area Builders Association (WABA) Home Show and the Clearwater Senior Center. I enjoy hearing many different perspectives on what's happening in District 2!

One issue everyone seems to be talking about is property taxes, especially with valuation notices going in the mail by March 1. For a better understanding of how the appraisal process works and what residents should expect this year, I interviewed our new County Appraiser Deanna Aspedon. In this video, she also explains how to appeal your valuation if you don't agree with it. Sedgwick County wants you to have a fair and accurate appraisal!

EMS teaches community CPR classes

As American Heart Month in February winds down, you can still take steps to protect the cardiovascular health of yourself and others! Sedgwick County EMS offers CPR classes in our community year-round. They recently taught members at the Mid-Kansas Jewish Federation how to perform CPR on adults and infants and how to help someone who is choking.

It's lifesaving information! Statistics show that bystanders who are able to start CPR before first responders arrive improve the patient's chance of survival. Watch the video to learn why YOU should take a CPR class, for the first time or to update your skills! Contact EMS at www.sedgwickcounty.org/ems.

Please don't feed animals at the park

Even though the squirrels, ducks and geese at Lake Afton and the Sedgwick County Park are very cute, please don't share your snacks with them! Giving human food to a wild animal can:

  • Lead to malnutrition or death because of an unhealthy diet.
  • Make them dependent on people for food.
  • Cause them to become aggressive because they no longer fear humans.
