Dear District 2 Residents,
On this day 38 years ago, President Ronald Regan proclaimed August 21st as National Senior Citizens Day here in the United States. This day celebrates and recognizes the millions of senior citizens who have spent years working, creating, and contributing to the world around us, making it a better place for future generations.
Senior citizens have laid the foundation for our community's continued growth, and they deserve recognition for their many contributions and accomplishments. District 2 is home to the largest population of seniors in Chula Vista, and we remain committed to serving both seniors and emerging seniors through our monthly Town Hall community meetings -New Friends of Norman Park Senior Center.
These gatherings provide a welcoming space for neighbors, friends, and families to connect, share experiences, and learn about valuable community resources. In celebration of National Senior Citizens Day, we are proud to recognize several of our regular attendees and share a glimpse of their cherished memories, thoughtful advice, and inspiring accomplishments.

Q: What is one moment that stuck with you growing up?
A: "When I was in the 4th grade the teacher had us line up for a race. I was not the fastest of the class, but I won because I was paying attention when she said "go." It became my motto: just pay attention." - Joan

Q: How do you stay active and connected?
A: "Recently I've been volunteering at the Chula Vista Museum and History Center. Our mission is to preserve and showcase the diverse and distinctive history of Chula Vista. Fortunately, we have received hundreds of documents, artifacts and photos and we are working to organize them. It's a win-win for me because I get to learn new things about Chula Vista and I get to help make them available for people to see." -Earl

Q: What advice would you give to younger generations?
A: "Begin a creative hobby such as painting, writing, singing, dancing, acting etc., that you will be able to enjoy throughout your life." -Jeff

A: "Pursue higher education and keep learning throughout your life, but don't rush through each stage just to get to the next. Some of life's most meaningful lessons come from being present and appreciating where you are today." - Maria

A: "I am especially proud of building Energy Communications over the past 37 years while using my work and experience to serve and strengthen the Chula Vista community. Helping create opportunities for others and giving back to the city I love has been one of my greatest privileges." - Patricia

New Friends of Norman Park Senior Center

If you are a senior, an emerging senior, or know someone who would like to connect with our community, you are invited to join us for our monthly meetings at the Norman Park Senior Center! At our District 2 Town Hall meetings, we take time to listen to our senior residents, connect them with important resources, and share the latest city updates in an inclusive space within our neighborhood.
At the last meeting, we heard from special guests Deputy District Attorney Martin Nuñez and AARP Associate State Director Israel Hernandez, who spoke about scam/fraud awareness and prevention.
Stay tuned for our next meeting on Monday, September 14th.

Downtown Chula Vista’s Third Avenue came alive to celebrate the 29th Annual Lemon Festival!
Special thanks to the Downtown Chula Vista Association (CVDA) for once again coordinating a lemon oasis for residents of all ages to enjoy and take pride in our heritage.
District 2 Office had a great time walking along Third Avenue and interacting with so many of our neighbors, small businesses, vendors, and local artists. Seeing the lively community come together, with its history on display, showed us how much we have to celebrate as a city. It truly was an amazing time for all of our friends here in Chula Vista, and we can't wait to see you all next year for the annual celebration of our neighborhood's past!
| | Congregational Place Dedication | | | | |
On Tuesday, August 18th, Retirement Housing Foundation (RHF), along with Community Congregational Development Corporation (CCDC), held a dedication for a new senior housing project, the Congregational Place. Located at 305 E Street, the recently constructed project serves Chula Vista's senior community by providing affordable housing with transit access, accessible infrastructure, and in-reach services tailored to seniors' needs. The building's first floor will be leased to San Ysidro Health to provide affordable, accessible healthcare services to seniors in the community through its PACE program.
We value our growing senior community here in Chula Vista, and we are glad to be making progress in creating a more accessible city for our friends and neighbors.

This August, Chula Vista Animal Services have reduced adoption fees for dogs, cats, and small pets in part of their Clear the Shelters promotion!
Dogs and Cats: $25
Small Pets: $5
All adoptions include neutering/spaying, microchipping, and vaccinations for your new pet.

| | | Sweetwater Authority Community Open House | | | | |
On Saturday, August 22 from 11AM-2PM, Sweetwater Authority will be having an open house touring of the Robert A. Perdue Water Treatment Plant. Guests will be able to learn about the intricacies of water quality, supplies, and infrastructure close up on site!
This event is free and open to the public, with free lunch provided to the first 200 attendees. There will also be raffles and prizes available to those who attend.

It's been 7 years since the last Harborfest Chula Vista. After a long hiatus, it's finally back for all to enjoy! Vendors, live music, and fun interactive activities will be available to create an all-inclusive celebration by the bay. See wildlife up close in the Seal Tour, catch the cruisers of the land in the Classic Car Expo, and drop by all the activities and shows that highlights the beauty of Chula Vista!
Harborfest is free and will be taking place on August 22 from 10AM-6PM. You can find the festival at 999 Bayside Parkway 91910.

On Saturday, September 12th, from 4-9PM, drop by Bonita Museum & Cultural Center for a pop-up art sale hosted by Chula Vista Art Guild. All kinds of art, ranging from paintings and professional photographs to jewelry and ceramics will be available and for sale, so make sure to drop by and give it a visit!

Admission is free! And part of the proceeds will go towards local community programs and scholarships.

Chula Vista Housing and Homelessness Services Department, MTS, and the District Attorney's Office, in coordination with other agencies, will be hosting a "Same Day Solutions Fair" to assist residents across San Diego.
The fair is meant to be a simple and accessible resource to resolve outstanding issues, consult legal advice for certain topics, and get on site assistance with many other programs. See flyer for more info.

The Chula Vista Museum & History Center will be having its Inaugural Exhibition on-The Japanese Story-exploring the history of the Japanese community and their culture here in Chula Vista.

TuYo Theatre's second production-Our Lady of the San Diego Convention Center-is coming to Chula Vista at Norman Park Senior Center.
On October 16 at 7:30PM, you can see the story of youth care workers Mili and Lupe as they work to assist young asylum seekers held at the San Diego Convention Center. Learn about important topics of immigration in a live program that tells the stories of children affected by border policies.
Tickets are free and first come/first served. Donations are accepted to support TuYo theater in their mission to spread awareness of sensitive but important topics in the modern era.
