International Celebration of Children

Spring Wood Middle School

On May 2, all District 20 students and their families are invited to participate in the International Celebration of Children.The event will feature games, food and entertainment from a variety of cultures. Click on the logo (left) to RSVP online. Registration slips were sent home with students and can also be returned to classroom teachers. Please note ALL students must be accompanied by an adult.

This event is being co-sponsored by the Bilingual Parent Advisory Council (BPAC) and the Superintendent's Parent Advisory Committee.

District 20 Board of Education
March 21, 2019 Meeting
The Keeneyville Elementary School District 20 Board of Education held a regular board meeting on March 21, 2019. Meeting highlights are listed below. The next regular meeting of the District 20 Board of Education will be held on Thursday, April 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Spring Wood Middle School Library. Meetings are videotaped and can be viewed here . Please allow at least one week for video to be uploaded for viewing.

March Board Meeting Highlights

  • Board Salute Awards
The District 20 Board of Education presented Board Salute Awards to Barb Fang, Lauren Schmidt and Alexandra Johnson. Recipients are highlighted below with their nominee and Board President, Heather Weishaar and Superintendent, Omar Castillo.

  • Faubourg Theatre presented on upcoming summer program for District 20 students.
  • Strategic Plan Update: Priorities have been identified and the Administrative Leadership Team will work on goals and timelines to present at the April board meeting.
  • Dr. Emmie Pawlak, Director for Teaching and Learning, reported on winter MAP scores. Dr. Pawlak shared that students are on target or surpassing the national averages in reading and math. She credits these gains to the District 20 teaching staff that is committed to professional development and the implementation of the Eureka math program.

Action Items:
  • Approval of the amended 2018 - 2019 school calendar. June 6 approved as the last day of school for the 2018 - 2019 school year.
  • Approval of the 2019 - 2020 school calendar. August 20 approved as the first day of student attendance for the 2019 - 2020 school year.
  • Approval of Spring Wood Assistant Principal contract for 2019 - 2020. Mr. Phil Aliano was named Assistant Principal for Spring Wood Middle School. Phil will assume his responsibilities on July 1.
Barb Fang, District 20 Payroll Specialist, was honored for her dedication and going above and beyond in everything she does. Barb was nominated by Wendy Flaherty.
Lauren Schmidt was recognized by Kim Cline. She is part of the Psychology and Social work department who are called on to support students, staff and administrators.
Alexandra Johnson was nominated by Nadine Tackitt (not pictured) for her assistance with filling in for a long-term substitute teacher. Her support was very much appreciated.
April Election Results
Congratulations to Darletta Anderson, Sara Bruno, April Dislers, Andrea Schnorr & Heather Weishaar on their reelection to the D20 Board of Education. We thank them, and board members Jennifer Kuban & Terry Walloch, for their continued commitment and leadership!
Early Childhood Center (ECC)
Parent Education Day

On Friday, March 22 a Parent Education Day was held at the ECC. Representatives from community organizations shared information about resources for families. Parents had an opportunity to hear presentations and also meet one on one for additional information.

Greenbrook Elementary School Math and Reading Night
On April 4, the staff at Greenbrook hosted a pirate themed math and reading night. Families spent the evening working on projects while the PTO hosted a book fair.
Spring Wood Middle School Students Volunteer Their Time
On April 11, students active in Dare to Dream and Charger Changers volunteered at Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) in Schaumburg. Spring Wood students were joined by District 20 staff as well. 

FMSC is a non-profit organization that welcomes volunteers to pack nutrient dense food for undernourished children in 60 countries. 
Waterbury Elementary School First Grade Musical
Waterbury first grade students, under the direction of Ms. Melanie Hughes, performed a spring music program at an all-school assembly and evening performance for parents. Musical selections included Spring is Coming, Little Peter Rabbit and Take Me Out to the Ball Game.
