🍁From the desk of the District Director🍁

Congratulations!

Smedley Distinguished bound, District 27 Club members, officers,

Division Directors, Area Directors and other District leaders.

The response to the Club's success plan was phenomenal. All but 2 of our active clubs submitted their club success plan to Toastmasters International on time. The other source of pride is the progress of our clubs in having Distinguished Club Program (DCP) goals.

We set a goal to have all our clubs achieve at least 5 DCP goals by December 31st 2025.

As of October 23, 2025, here are the DCP goals by club totals.

🏆6 Goals - 1 Club, USDA.

🏆5 Goals -2 Clubs: Town of Capitol Heights and Challenger.

🏆4 Goals -3 Clubs: Helmsmen, DTM Masters and SALT.

There were 15 clubs with 3 goals, 19 clubs with 2 goals, 39 clubs with 1 goal and 12 clubs with 0 goals.🏆 I am impressed with the progress. Clearly, we have some work to do!

The motto for the district this year is: No Member Left Behind! No Club Left Behind

Clubs with no goals, we are going to depend on you to do your part for our members and for your club. 12 clubs are not in good standing after the October dues renewal.

For a club to be considered in good standing, the club must have a minimum of 8 members. These 12 clubs are below the 8-member threshold. Let’s be innovative in finding new ways to attract members to our clubs. Let’s be sure to have showcase-quality meetings every time. If your club is not meeting during the Government shut down. I urge you to continue meeting. Use the free versions of Zoom or Google Meets or if a member is generous and has a paid Zoom account, use it and let's continue meeting. We can progress even if the Government is not allowing us to meet. We can do this District 27!

A few shout-outs to our Division and Area Directors:

Divisions A and C had 100% of their club success plans submitted. Divisions B and E missed their 100% because one club did not submit their plans. Currently, 52 % of the first round Area Club Visit Reports have

been submitted to Toastmasters International.

The following Area Directors have submitted 100% of their Club Visit Reports:

AD 12 Mariko Price, AD15 Shawny Stone.AD 23 Terri Powell-Brown, AD 31 Pamela Kirby (first to complete all visits), AD 33Gloria Anderson, AD 35 Gwendolyn Peacher, and

AD 55Portia Morris.

AD 32 Magda Brown completed 80% of her club visit reports.

These Area Directors have submitted 75% of their club visit reports: AD 21 Ebony Grey, AD 25 Deborah Jones, and AD 34 Sereeta Morrison.

November 1st 2025, begins the 2nd round of Club Officer Training:

Club officers, please arrange your schedules to complete your training earlier rather than later. Should our club officers complete round 2 of their training by December 31st they can complete DCP goal number 9 for their club.

Completing training early means you do not have to worry about waiting until the end of the training period, thereby hustling to meet a deadline. This leaves members time to concentrate on the upcoming Club and Area Speech Contests for the Spring.

In closing, from the District leadership, we wish you a very

Happy Thanksgiving Holiday🍁

To our Veterans, we thank you for your courageous service.🌠

Yours in Service,

Beverly Byam-Hercules, DTM

Welcome to the holiday season

It's time to take down the Halloween decorations and put up the Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Hanukkah decorations! It’s also the season for attending the second round of officer training, and it's always the season for moving forward in Pathways!

Club officer training: District 27 had a great first round, with all but ten clubs meeting the minimum of four officers trained and 29 clubs having all seven officers trained in the first round of training. As you read this, the second round of training is underway.

There will be regular sessions with breakout rooms for each officer role, combined

sessions with all office roles presented to all attending (great for those holding more

than one office!), noon-time single-office sessions, and an in-person training at the

Arlington Mill Community Centre. Check the District website and keep an eye out for

emails with details.

We are also seeking instructors for officer roles and electives for the upcoming

sessions. If you are new to conducting training and this interests you, there will be a

training session on the morning of November 8th. Let’s make the second round a

resounding success!

Pathway: The new updates to Pathways are here! Are you confused about them?

We will be holding some sessions on the Pathways changes, including a session

immediately after our first TLI on November 1.

Mary Billingsley won the drawing for the free path for completing a Level 5 in

September. As you read this, the October drawing will be about to take place. If you

submitted a level completion in October, you may win a free Path! If you have trouble

with Pathways, please contact me; District 27 is committed to supporting all members’

progress in Pathways.

Contests: District 27 will hold in-person Evaluation and International Speech contests

in the spring. Clubs should hold contests before February 15 or appoint contestants

before their Area contest. Areas will hold contests between February 15 and March 15.

Divisions will hold theirs between March 16 and April 15.

District Conference: The winners of the Division contests will compete at the District

Annual Conference, which will be in person on May 2 at George Mason University

Mason Square in Arlington. Keep your eye out for more details.

Moving Ahead: Do you need ideas for your Level 4 or 5 projects or your DTM project?

You can complete a project and support your fellow District Toastmaster members and

clubs. Some examples of projects could include working with TLIs, leading a virtual or

in-person workshop, heading a committee for the spring conference, or helping an Area

or Division Director by coordinating the contest. Choosing such a project is a win-win.

you will gain leadership experience and move forward on your Path, and District 27 will better support its members. Let’s leave no member or club behind!🌺

Conference Roles Required

We are urgently seeking volunteers to help with the final Annual Conference for District 27

Do you need credit toward your HPL or DTM project? Here’s your opportunity to

complete education goals and to be part of the last District 27 Conference before the

merging of Districts 27 and 36 to create District 220.

District 27 wants your enthusiasm and energy in filling the Conference roles defined

below. These roles require both delegating and teamwork to ensure tasks are

completed efficiently and on schedule. Please consider sharing your skills and ensuring

the success of this event. You will be supported by a strong team.

Budget: Responsible for handling all financial matters regarding the conference,

including prompt payment of bills. Prepares a conference budget and a financial

report of income and expenses.

Hall of Fame: Coordinates the recognition ceremony for individuals and clubs

achieving success. In charge of the DTM Hug Line.

Logistics: Serves as liaison for District 27 in dealings with the venue, all vendors, and

speakers. Is responsible for communicating all meeting specifications to the vendor,

such as meeting room setup, AV equipment needs, meal function details,

accommodations, and additional supplies.

Publicity and Promotions: Publicises and promotes the meeting throughout the District

27 and the public. Works closely with the Public Relations Manager and local media.

Sponsorship: Responsible for finding sponsors to help pay for the cost of the

conference, such as clubs or organisations advertising in the conference program,

vendors selling products at the conference, and organisations sponsoring the

conference. Works with sponsors attending the conference to ensure they are

valued.

Contest: Coordinates the room and audio setup. Works with the Contest Master

DTM Vince Caldwell, to ensure all contestants are eligible to compete and familiar with

the contest rules. Works with the Chief Judge DTM John Johnson, Jr. to ensure judges

are eligible to judge and judges, timers, and ballot counters are briefed on their

duties. Ensures ballots are counted carefully and awards are presented to the winners.

Please consider the role your experience and strengths suit best. Contact our Program

Quality Director, Jenny Genser White, at pqd@d27-tm.org to sign up for one of these roles.

🤪Joke Corner!🤣

🦜 The Toastmaster Parrot 🌳

A man bought a talking parrot, hoping it would help him practise his speeches.

But every time he started to rehearse, the parrot would interrupt:

“Boring! Too long! Use more vocal variety!”

Frustrated, the man took the parrot to a Toastmasters meeting.

After the meeting, the parrot flapped its wings and said,

“Wow! I didn’t know you could get applause for giving feedback!

🦜One day, a man went to the District 27 Conference fundraising auction. There, he found an exotic parrot. He really wanted this bird, so he got caught up in the bidding. He kept bidding, but someone always outbid him — confidently, clearly, with perfect vocal variety and excellent audience awareness, his opponent continued!

Finally, after bidding far more than he’d planned, he won! As he was paying, he said to the auctioneer, “I sure hope this parrot isn’t defective. I’d hate to pay this much and find out he can’t talk!”

The auctioneer smiled and said, “Talk? Of course, he can talk! He’s a Toastmaster!

Who do you think kept bidding against you?”

🌿🍁Inspirational Message🍁🌿

My fellow Toastmasters,

November generally begins a time in America when we tend to turn our thoughts toward

thankfulness. The Thanksgiving Day holiday is usually the cornerstone of those thoughts. We should not wait until November to be thankful! This should be an everyday proposition. If we wake up daily with an attitude of gratitude, life will be so much sweeter.

Do you keep a gratitude journal? This is a written record of the things you are thankful for

that you add to regularly, if not daily. Consider starting one if you don’t currently have one.

Keeping a written list of the things we are grateful for not only helps us see how good life is, but it keeps us from the negative focus of “Ain’t it Awful” thinking.

Beginning right now, purpose to see things differently, positively, gratefully. The whole world

changes right before your eyes when you begin to see it differently. When we look through the lens of thankfulness, whole new possibilities emerge. Do you want to change the way you look at things? Be thankful that the glass is half full!

Thankfully Submitted,

Rev. Don Hutchins
