Development Project Updates: The Atlantic One apartment development, located at 1736 East Atlantic Blvd and the adjacent parcels between Atlantic Blvd and SE 3rd St, is currently undergoing the city's development review process for a revised site plan that includes additional parking and other changes. The modified plan will require approval from the Planning & Zoning Board. Additionally, there is currently no development plan for the former Bank of America site at Cypress Rd & McNab Rd.

CRA Projects: If you’ve seen a lot about the McNab House & Botanical Gardens and the new "Downtown," it’s because the city has spent significant time and tax dollars marketing these large, expensive projects. I encourage you to look beyond the drawings and promises. These projects—and the marketing campaigns surrounding them—remind me of the Atlantic/Dixie project. While that area’s appearance has improved, traffic in our city is at an all-time high. These new developments may look impressive in renderings, but they come with substantial risks and costs.

Pompano in Tallahassee: Last week, I attended Broward Days in Tallahassee. The Florida Legislature is in session for 60 consecutive days, until May 2nd 2025. Over 2000 bills have been filed, but typically, fewer than 10% of filed bills pass both chambers and become law. The City of Pompano Beach is seeking state appropriations for key projects, and we spent time in important meetings advocating for our needs and receiving legislative updates.

Commission Highlights

In the past month, we have accomplished the following:

Voted to hold a workshop on the city's procurement ordinance.
Installed a new Fire Chief, Pete McGinnis.
Celebrated the Blanche Ely Tigers’ state basketball championship.

We also awarded construction contracts for several key projects, including:

McNab Streetscape and Bridge.
Pickleball courts at Kip Jacoby Park.
Expanded parking lot at the Senior Center.

All of these projects will begin soon.

The schedules for the McNab Bridge and the SE 6th Terrace Bridge are linked, as both cannot be under construction simultaneously. The plan is to demolish and rebuild the McNab Bridge during the summer of 2026. I am working with the city to frontload and expedite the timeline for the SE 6th Terrace Bridge as much as possible. We remain in regular contact with federal regulatory agencies and will be issuing an Invitation to Bid to contractors next month.
