August 2024 | Issue 17

Road Closure: A complete closure of Copans Rd. at the railroad tracks just west of I-95 by Home Depot is scheduled for this week. The closure, eastbound & westbound, will be from Friday, August 16, 2024 at 6:00 a.m. to Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at 6:00 a.m. This will allow workers to perform warning signal safety upgrades on the railroad crossing.

Upgrades at the Beach: All new playground equipment is being installed at the beach playground. The beach playground is expected to reopen in late August. Improvements are also happening at the beach parking garage. A new traffic flow in the garage will utilize both entries and exits to improve efficiency.

How to Vote: August 20th is Primary Election day. Early voting for the Primary Election will be held from August 10th to August 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. In Pompano Beach, both Emma Lou Olson and E. Pat Larkins are early voting locations. Bring one or two forms of valid and current identification that include your signature and photo.

Commission Highlights

  • At our budget session on July 15th, the commission voted to lower the general operating tax rate (millage) from 5.2705 to 5.244. This is the first decrease in the city's general operating tax rate since 2016. I am proud to have led the effort for a decrease and will continue to fight for lower taxes.
  • The commission continues debating the efficacy of ShotSpotter in our City. The system did not operate as intended during a recent shooting of a 16-year-old. The system is supposed to alert law enforcement of gunfire happening outdoors. The contract costs $341,250 per year.
  • The School Board announced that Broward County achieved an "A" rating for the first time since 2011. Four schools in Pompano Beach improved at least one letter grade this year.
