An Update on the Wichita Land Bank!
|
|
Housing and Community Services staff working with the Wichita Land Bank have begun community outreach efforts as the land bank acquired its first two parcels at the northwest corner of 9th and Ash. The goal of these efforts is to build relationships with both communities and developers to further affordable housing goals and facilitate the redevelopment of challenging properties in ways that benefit surrounding communities.
On May 18, four staff members attended the A. Price Woodard and Murdock neighborhood association meeting to share about the Wichita Land Bank and listen to residents of these neighborhoods on the types of development they believe would benefit their neighborhoods. Residents indicated that quality, affordable housing is an ongoing need, and that small-scale housing development, ranging from single family homes to quadplex developments, would be a fit for the community. Senior housing that would enable people to remain in their neighborhoods also would be desirable.
Staff also presented on other affordable housing programs in the City’s toolbox, including the Affordable Housing Fund, Public Housing disposition process and goals, Home Repair programs to assist low-to-moderate income homeowners, and the HOMEownership programs that assist with affordable housing construction and down payment assistance.
Feedback from community members emphasized the importance of programs such as Home Repair that can assist people in remaining in their homes into their senior years. They also expressed a desire for greater code enforcement, street maintenance, and other City activities to assist in maintaining the neighborhoods.
