Green space is a major contributor to the beauty and qualify of life in Sandy Springs and this newsletter provides updates on several of the green space projects in District 3 and across the city.
Upcoming Greenspace and Recreation Projects
The Marsh Creek Preserve on Johnson Ferry Rd. will provide flood control and water-quality management in the downtown district west of Roswell Road and downstream from City Springs. Significant rock work has been required to build the retention basin, but much of the rock hammering should conclude by the end of August, which is good news for our neighbors along Johnson Ferry and in Mountaire Springs and Whispering Pines.
The park should be completed late this year with a ribbon cutting potentially in November.
The Abernathy Greenway South project should begin construction later this year with a completion goal of June 2017. This 12-acre stretch of land traverses the south-side of Abernathy Rd. from the Sandy Springs Arts Center to just past Wright Rd. and will include a 1-mile crushed-slate trail system ideal for walkers and joggers. This project is being done in coordination with the Sandy Springs Conservancy, which has been a crucial partner in many of our city's key green space projects.
Sandy Springs owns several flood-zone properties across the city that were originally purchased by FEMA and deeded to the city. One of these tracts, a 5-acre parcel on Windsor Parkway near the Peachtree Dunwoody soccer fields is being considered for a new park called Windsor Meadows Park.
The City will begin comprehensive renovations to the gymnastics building at Hammond Park with completion expected by this December. This is an important asset for recreation in Sandy Springs and these improvements will be welcomed by the over 800 families that currently use this facility for gymnastics, karate and fitness classes.
