Joaquin and Hermelinda Murillo greet children with a friendly smile every morning, Monday through Friday, except for school holidays.
The married duo of 52 years are the crossing guards for families taking children to Bracher and Briarwood elementary schools in the
Santa Clara Unified School District
. They’ve created a safe route for children, through rain or shine, for the last 15 years.
The Murillos are loved so much by the school community, they were entered in America’s Favorite Crossing Guard, a friendly competition that asks community members vote for their favorite crossing guard throughout the country. Safe Kids Worldwide is the nonprofit organization that holds the competition and educates communities about reducing traffic injuries, drownings, falls, burns, poisonings and more.
By the end of the first round of the competition, the Murillos collected 189 votes. While not enough to make them America’s favorite crossing guards, they certainly are District 4’s favorite.
