“Evolve Your Leadership and Empower Your Growth As an Area Director!”
1. Understand the Culture of Each Club
Each club has a unique identity and a unique set of goals. Some clubs will desire to be a Distinguished Club, some clubs will desire to be President's Distinguished and other clubs will desire to have 20 members and reach charter strength. Some clubs will be focused on creating a social atmosphere while others are focused on education and honing their public speaking skills. Speak with the Club Officers and club members to understand the culture and goals of each club and how you can best support the club as an Area Director.
2. Make your Goals as Area Director Clear from the Start
As an incoming Area Director, you should set your goals and begin with the end in mind. If your goal is to have a Distinguished Area by the end of the Toastmasters Year, let the clubs in your area know. These clubs may be eager to support you in achieving your goal as an Area Director. Let Club Officers and club members know your goals and keep these goals in mind throughout the Toastmasters year.
3. Stay Connected with Club Officers
Find ways to stay connected with Club Officers. This can be through a WhatsApp group chat and/or an email chain. Connection can also be made through Area Council meetings. My recommendation is to have Area Council meetings at least bi-monthly and to invite those Club Officers who are interested and available to attend. These three means of connection are helpful for fostering community during your journey as an Area Director.
4. Identify a Strong Team
As an Area Director, I recommend that you identify at least one or more Assistant Area Directors. During the year, these Assistant Area Directors can provide you with support and advice for both you and the clubs in your area.
5. Remain Patient and Enjoy the Journey
The journey of being an Area Director is one of patience and planning. Enjoy every moment of being an Area Director as the year can go by quickly.
