Spring Contest Season is Upon Us!
Plan Your Club Contests
During the Spring, clubs across District 42 conduct the following speech contests:
  • International Speech Contest
  • Humourous Speech Contest
Planning club contests is primarily the responsibility of the VP Education, however it is a great opportunity for members to help with planning the event that can earn them credit towards their Competent Leader manual or their Pathway.
Winners at each Club advance to compete at the Area contest, winners of the Area advance to compete at the Division contest and winners of the Division advance to compete at the District contest (held during  District 42 Spring Conference , May 3-5, 2019 in Moose Jaw, SK). For the International Speech Contest only, winners of the District advance to compete at the World Championship of Public Speaking (held during the  International Convention , August 2019 in Denver, Colorado)
The deadline to complete Club contests is  March 17, 2019  (or two weeks before your Area Contest). Please speak with your Area Director about scheduling your event.
Resources are Available
For information about running a contest, see the  new Speech Contest Rulebook International Speech Contest Kit , and  Humourous Speech Contest Kit .

Fellow Toastmasters, the Spring Conference could be your opportunity to show off both your verbal and visual communication skills. For the very first time at a District 42 Conference there will be Poster Sessions. In order for the sessions to be successful we need you!
Poster Sessions are posters that may include drawings, photographs, charts, graphs, and textual data related to a specific subject. Toastmasters will visit your Poster Session at a set time to view your information and ask questions about your display. (An example of a Poster Session topic may be “Five Ways to Engage your Club Membership”). Follow this link to a Microsoft template to help understand a Poster layout.

We are looking for volunteers to create/present a Poster Session on a topic related to either leadership or communication. Does this opportunity interest you? Do you want to be a part of our first ever poster session?

Building Leadership Muscles!
How do you build your leadership muscles? By working to strengthen those muscles!
Leadership training begins with club meeting roles: start by learning how to listen as the grammarian, timer or evaluator; strengthen those feedback muscles as the general evaluator or speech evaluator; and finally take your leadership to the next level by becoming a club officer. Each club officer position strengthens different leadership muscles, for example, as the Vice President of Education you will build your planning, organization, scheduling and delegation muscles; as the Treasurer you will build your budgeting, financial reporting and money management muscles.

The next step in leadership training could be to venture outside the club by serving as an Area Director or Division Director. As an Area Director you will strengthen your skills by learning to plan, motivate, encourage and inform across clubs that have their own unique culture. As a Division Director, you will build muscles by supporting Area Directors as well as the Club Growth, Program Quality and District Director.
Are you interested in building your leadership muscles? How do you want to grow? What skills do you want to gain? For more information about leadership contact Leadership Chairman Jacquie Schnider, DTM PID at
