Greetings District 5:

Are you allowed to build a tiny home in your backyard? Can you turn an old church into an event center? Do you want to learn more about development projects in your neighborhood and how rezoning occurs? Get the answers to these and other questions during Zoning 101 – a LOT to learn, an evening workshop aimed at beginners. Scott Wadle, director of the Metropolitan Area Planning Department, will lead the presentation and share insights into the City’s zoning recommendations. Admission is free.

The Wichita Fire Department's 15th Chief, Michael Mire (pronounced mirror), will be the guest speaker at this Saturday's (October 24) District 5 Breakfast. Fire Chief Mire is a nearly 30-year veteran of the Houston (Texas) Fire Department, most recently serving as an Assistant Fire Chief and overseeing the Emergency Response Command. My wife, Veronica, will be making the breakfast, providing fruit, sweet rolls, bacon, and breakfast casseroles. Bring your appetite and your questions for Chief Mire!

More updates on 135th Street

2026 135th Street culvert and bridge rebuilding project

Questions about 135th Street reconstruction? Bring them to the November 2 District 5 Advisory Board meeting when our colleagues from Public Works & Utilities will give updates on this major road project. 135th Street from Central to 13th Street remains closed and will open to northbound one-way traffic in mid-December.

Today's Poll

At a meeting last month, the City Council voted to proceed with a contract and select a vendor for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) improvements on 21st Street from 119th Street out west to Main Street downtown. Fiber-optic communication cables will be installed and upgrades will be made to existing signals to allow for synchronization and improved traffic flow along that corridor. The project also gives City staff the ability to program the traffic signals into the Advanced Traffic Management System and monitor those 21st Street signals remotely.

How often do you travel 21st Street between 119th Street out west and Main Street downtown?

Is your HOA's contact info current?

Are you getting ready to elect new officers for 2027? If so, please make sure your HOA board member listing is up-to-date with the City. As a courtesy, the Metropolitan Area Planning Department will notify a Homeowners Association or Neighborhood Association about zoning cases in their area--but only if they have the correct contact information.

Do you need to update your HOA board listing? Let us know!

Email Community Services Representative Teresa Veazey (tcveazey@wichita.gov), and she will add new officers and their contact info to the Planning Department's HOA/NA database.
