What's New in District 5?
Anaheim Coves Expansion
The northern expansion of the Anaheim Coves Trail is now open!

The expansion includes another mile of trail along the Santa Ana River as well as an awesome playground with outdoor exercise equipment. This is a great addition to our community and the Frontera Street neighborhood, where kids now have a playground within walking distance.

At this new, one-of-a-kind playground, kids can dig through the sand and find buried dinosaur bones, or they can climb on rock formations or take a swing on the zip line. This is a magnificent new park that Anaheim residents will enjoy for many years to come.

I can't wait to enjoy the trail with my grandchildren. And I am looking forward to see what we get up to next along the Santa Ana River.
Lunch with Little League at the Big A
The North, East and West Anaheim Little Leagues joined me at the Big A to celebrate the beginning of the 2019 Angels Baseball season. I enjoyed listening to the guest speakers, Angels pitching coach Doug White and third base coach Mike Gallegos.

One of the Little League coaches asked what advice the professional coaches had for young baseball players. Mr. Gallegos responded, "Have fun on the field, respect your teachers and listen to your parents."

Great advice! Go Angels!
Another season in the books
We closed another great season for the East Anaheim Little League with the annual awards ceremony at Juarez Park this month.

More than 200 players received recognition for their sportsmanship and efforts this season.

I want to congratulate the board and coaches of the league for their continued commitment to our children. The parents also deserve a tip of our hat for the many practices and games they attend on behalf of their kids.

It’s a lot of work, but these young players will become great parents themselves in the future. It's all about the kids!
Anaheim Fire & Rescue Graduation

Sixteen new Anaheim Fire and Rescue Recruits graduated from the Fire Academy last month. They completed 8 weeks of intensive training and now will be working for the next year to complete their Probationary time in the field.

Congratulations to these men and women who have worked very hard in order to serve our residents! .
Improving the Neighborhood
A new vision for State College
At the June 4 City Council meeting, I asked city staff to return at an upcoming meeting with a visioning plan for the State College Boulevard corridor.

My goal with this plan is to reactivate the corridor as an economically vibrant area. I look forward to taking a look at the options our staff bring forward to reinvigorate one of District 5's major thoroughfares.
Anaheim Anytime
Did you know it's easy to report neighborhood issues like graffiti and shopping carts?

My wife, Susan, and I recently spent a couple of hours driving around District 5, using the My Anaheim mobile app to report almost 40 incidents of graffiti, debris, stray furniture, shopping carts and more.

Anyone can use the My Anaheim app or go online to report issues like these through our Anaheim Anytime system. It gives you access to city services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from the comfort of your own home.

The city generally responds to complaints within a few days.
Around the District
Anaheim art contest
For the 18th straight year, I was privileged to give eight 3rd grade students awards for the History of Anaheim Art Contest at a recent Anaheim Elementary School District Board meeting.

I have supported this program in memory of my late mother, Eleanor Faessel. She loved talking with young students when she was a volunteer at the Anaheim Museum, which is now called the MUZEO.
Memorial Day tribute
I joined the VFW Post 3137 and the American Legion Post 72 at the historic Anaheim Cemetery, for the annual Memorial Day service last month.

We took the time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

Thank you to all of those who keep this event going year after year so that we never forget those who serve our country.
Construction Alert
Construction of the sewer line along State College is progressing. So far, 7,500 feet of pipe has been installed, or about 1.5 miles.
