November 2020 Edition
After six months of steady progress recovering from early COVID closures, our State is now experiencing rapid increases in hospitalizations and early signs of an increase in daily death rate. Howard County trends are consistent with surrounding counties and the State.

Please continue to support our local businesses and neighbors who could be facing some challenging months. Everything from your Thanksgiving dinner items to your holiday gifts are available locally.

Current information on restrictions, openings/closures, support programs, etc. can be found here. You can also like the District 5 Facebook Page to see current news and announcements. Please share our newsletter and encourage others to sign up so they can stay apprised of what is happening around the community.

David Yungmann
Howard County Council, District 5
Legislation

COVID hasn't slowed down the stream of legislation before the Council. Over the past few months, I've voted against legislation to support the $15 statewide minimum wage, to create a racial equity task force and to halt previously approved development. Two Council members joined me in approving the purchase of a property in Turf Valley where a much needed new elementary school will be located. Bills currently before the Council include broad protections for illegal immigrants (sanctuary laws) and release of contingency funds related to the new Arts and Cultural Center.

A public hearing is held on every bill, resolution or other legislative action. This is the opportunity for you to make your views known to the Council. It is critical that council members hear from the public so please consider testifying on legislation that is of interest to you.
Please be sure to check the link to the full calendar for any date or time changes that may be necessary due to scheduling during the continued stay at home order.

Congratulations to Mount View Middle School on being recognized as one of 367 National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2020. Deer population management programs, such as managed hunts and sharpshooting, are not possible in many areas of the County. Therefore, the Department of Recreation & Parks has developed a short document to help homeowners and gardeners live in harmony with white-tailed deer. It contains information on how to use deer repellents and fencing to protect crops and property, how to avoid deer-auto collisions, and how to prevent contact with Lyme Disease-carrying ticks.
