In thinking about a message for this newsletter, my mind took me to an inspirational and meaningful message recently created and posted on social media by Rotarian Lisa Schwab of the Playa Venice Sunrise Club. Sit down, take a deep breath, exhale slowly, and read Lisa’s message below. Lisa owns and operates Cantalini’s Beach Restaurant located in Playa del Rey. For great Italian dishes and friendly service, this is the place to go. Thank you Lisa for sharing your Thanksgiving Message with all of us in Rotary District 5280. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

-Governor Joe and Rozangela

"Life moves so fast. As the year rolls by, it is the beginning of the holiday season that inspires me to take pause – to reflect, to review. Mingled with regret and disappointments lies simple gratitude, for friends and family, past and present – opportunities found and lost… a myriad of emotions. There are loved ones that have gone and the vivid memories that come to the surface, especially at this time of year. There are many people suffering - loved ones…and those I will never know. Wars, fires, and other acts of violence and destruction, general discord and the lack of compassion and understanding and, through it all, I consider the blessings of the past year and I continue to pray for peace – for all.

Faith, Hope and Love – but the greatest of these is LOVE.
May you feel love and share love this Thanksgiving and throughout the Holiday Season!"

Rotary Wildfire Relief

"As evacuation orders are slowly lifted in the burn areas of the wildfires and there is growing concern for mudslides, District 5280 is poised to take action. In this time, when the fires have ravaged so much of our precious homes and land, we need to come together to make this better. That's what Rotary does," Governor Joe Vasquez.

Woodland Hills Rotarian Sheri Polak is our official Rotary contact for wildfire relief efforts. Please contact Sheri for any offer of or request for help. Sheri can be reached at [email protected] or 818-635-9139.
Join T.H.E. for free health screenings and more at the 2018 Angel City Celebration, led by Rotary Club of Los Angeles (LA5) in partnership with Rotarians across Rotary District 5280, and the County of Los Angeles. This major event brings together city, county, community nonprofits, and volunteer groups from business and service organizations to provide a resource and health fair and festive event.

“The Celebration will include a variety of fun activities and entertainment for both kids and adults. Angel City offers a safe environment for families live in South LA to enjoy a fun-filled day in the park,” Celebration Chair Marjorie Heller.

Volunteers are needed to make this year’s celebration a success. LA5 is looking for 400 volunteers who will be help stage the event, pass out toys, books to the children, serve food, coordinate logistics, check people in, take photos and video, and more.
3,000 will enjoy the Pancake Feast, prepared and served by volunteers.

3,500 to 4,000 children from age 5 to 10 and their families will attend the Health Fair, the Book Fair, the Farmers’ Market and much more.

Need a Bartender?
District 5280 Rotaract would like to start promoting a new project. We are in need of a lot of fundraising for the Humanitarian trip backpacks....and we did well with our tip jar at the District Picnic bartending gig.....so we are asking Rotarians if they need bartenders for their Rotary events. All we ask for is a tip jar!

Rotary Rose Parade Float

In 1978 watching the Pasadena Rose Parade on Television, Jack Gilbert, President of the Wilshire Rotary Club, believed that by entering a float in the 1980 New Year’s Day Rose Parade, Rotary could communicate its message, “Service Above Self” to millions of people worldwide.

This is the 40th consecutive year of Rotary participating in the Tournament of Roses Parade. The Rose Parade is viewed by over 73 million individuals world-wide and a live audience of almost 1 million!

There are still a few openings for Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors to decorate this year’s float.
Interact Water Project

The ambitious Interact District 5280 water project, “Make it Rain for Water," with Pure Water for the World, deserves the support and assistance of Rotary Clubs and Rotarians. The goal is to raise $100,000 for Trojes, Honduras to sponsor latrines, water filters, rainwater harvesters, and WASH training for the villages that lack consistent access to clean water.

The District Interact Board is asking Interact Clubs within the district to fund raise $650 per semester, or roughly $50 per person. This is an opportunity not only to change the world for the better, but also for each school’s club to fulfill the yearly International project requirement by Rotary International.

Proceeds may be donated by logging on the Make It Rain for Water website:

Featured Project: Calabasas Rotary Thanksgiving for Seniors
On Thanksgiving Day, November 22nd, the Rotary Club of Calabasas, with its partners, the Sagebrush Cantina, will host its 30th Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon for Seniors! Seniors from the surrounding communities, senior and assisted living and retirement centers are honored guests.

Last year over 175 Rotarians, students and community volunteers served meals to well over 700 appreciative Seniors. This year they anticipate receiving an even greater number of guests.

As in years past, the Calabasas Rotary Club relies on the generosity of local citizens and businesses for food, services and funds in order to provide a full and festive holiday meal. This year, in order to provide meals and fellowship for as many Seniors as they can accommodate, they are offering a number of different options to those who wish to participate as sponsors of this popular Calabasas holiday tradition and make a significant contribution to its success. Check out their club website for more information.
Goat Yoga
Will a llama be next? We "kid" you not -- goats are the hottest thing in yoga. Goats seem to bring out the best in people. it’s pretty hard to take yourself or life too seriously when there are goats involved , so it’s a great way to break from your normal mindset and relieve stress.   District Administrator and Westchester Rotary Club President Tori Hettinger seems to really be enjoying the craze of Goat Yoga.

If yoga is "all about breathing," then goat yoga might be all about laughter. Tori could not be smiling or laughing more!
