District 6 Newsletter
May 2018
Dear Neighbors ,

We have an opportunity to add affordable housing in our city in the form of secondary units (also known as granny units, Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADUs). Both the city and the State of California are making it easier for residents to take advantage of the space they have on their property to provide a small living space for either a family member or a rental unit that can create extra income for the property owner. I am completely supportive of these types of units and I encourage anyone interested in creating a secondary unit to check out the very useful information page on the San Jose City Planning website.

AT&T to Install Small Cells on 170 Streetlights in San Jose

On Tuesday, May 1st, City Council passed an item that will put AT&T small cells on 170 streetlights across the city (40 will be in District 6). Because some of these streetlights are still the old yellow sodium lights, I requested that we negotiate with AT&T to replace the old lights with LEDs when they work on those poles. Revenue from this contract is intended to help bridge the digital divide in San Jose. Although some of my colleagues disagreed, I made the case that internet connectivity has become as necessary to the public as electricity or our local streets.

As you know, I have been a strong proponent of the city focusing its efforts and resources on core services. Since connectivity is part of our required infrastructure, we need to make sure everyone has access.
