D64 Shining Stars At Franklin

At the October Board meeting, we celebrated a Franklin Elementary School student and two staff members as part of our D64 Shining Star series! These honorees exemplify our District mission: “At D64, our mission is to foster opportunities for discovery, engagement, and growth for all students. We accomplish this by nurturing interdependence, appreciation of differences, and care for self and others.”

Thank you to Franklin teachers Shirlee Pater and Stephanie Tazioli, and 3rd-grader David Lasak for being Shining Stars in our D64 community!

“David has stood up for what is right and makes sure to care for others and himself,” Franklin principal Kristin Williams shared proudly. “As a Franklin student and citizen of Park Ridge, all we want for all of our learners is to model that empathy, kindness, and warmth towards all people.

News From October 17 Regular BOE Meeting

The District 64 Board of Education held a regular meeting on Thursday, October 17th in the Hendee Rooms at the Jefferson Early Childhood Center. You can watch or listen to a meeting replay on our YouTube page

Principals Appreciation Month

October is National Principals Month, and we want to recognize this fantastic group of educators. “We are very fortunate to have people that are really dedicated towards our staff and all of our students and our community members to ensure that our buildings and everything happening in them are always of the highest caliber,” said Superintendent Dr. Ben Collins. “I just cannot say enough wonderful, glowing things about our eight building leaders and our assistant principals, too, and all the things that they do at our schools. It’s a really, really, really hard job. We are the lucky ones to have the service that they provide for us, and there’s no way that we can ever thank you enough for the job that you do.”

Financial Projections Discussion

Chief School Business Official Dr. Adam Parisi discussed the District's financial projections over the next five years. Scenarios examining the District’s fund balance projections considered factors like whether the referendum would pass in November or if it was unsuccessful.

You can view Dr. Parisi’s presentation here on our website. Also, his presentation starts here during the stream of the Board meeting. This topic contains many nuances, so we recommend that you watch the presentation to understand the context around each scenario.

Superintendent Update

The District’s current Strategic Plan runs through 2026. In preparation for creating a new one, Dr. Collins researched and analyzed various strategic plans from other school districts to understand common elements and best practices. When putting together a strategic plan, a point of emphasis is having clear, measurable outcomes that can drive the District’s work rather than just broad goals. The next steps include the Board and Cabinet team participating in a workshop in January to discuss the strategic plan process further. Then, in the spring, the District will work on the initial steps for a design process for a new strategic plan with the goal of the new plan beginning in the 2026-2027 school year.

D64 Schools Compost

Did you know that D64 schools have composting during their school lunches?

Students can compost their food waste instead of just throwing it away. This helps keep food scraps out of the landfill, where it creates methane, and turns it into fertilizer to grow more food.

Students can compost:

  • All food
  • Food-soiled paper like dirty napkins, pizza boxes, and paper plates
  • Paper lunch bags without stickers

Empty drink containers like milk cartons or plastic water bottles and other recyclable packaging can still go in recycling. Check out this video to see how it works.

If you’d like to compost at home, Collective Resource offers composting services to Park Ridge residents at a discounted rate. Or learn how to compost in your backyard

Fun In The Garden

Students at Roosevelt have been having a blast in their community garden. Thanks to Mrs. Houmpavlis for sharing how their students picked beans and learned about different caterpillars!

The Washington School Garden Club has been working hard on their fall cleanup duties! Mrs. DeWitt's class shared with us everything they've been up to. Great job, Wildcats!

Field Student Art Show

The Field Student Art Show at Triple Scoop'd is up and running! The collection of art includes pieces from students in K-5th grade. You can view the stunning art until November 27th. Make sure you head over and appreciate the great work by our students!

Special Olympics

Fall has just begun, but we are beginning to plan for the Special Olympics Spring Games 2025!

D64 participates in the Special Olympics Track and Field events held at Prospect High School. These events are an opportunity to foster participation in sport and celebrate the success of student athletes in our community. Special Olympics transforms the lives of people with intellectual disabilities, allowing them to realize their full potential in sports and in life.

This year, the event will take place May 10-11th, 2025. If you think your student is eligible to participate in this opportunity, please reach out to your child’s special education case manager.
