No School on Monday

All District 64 schools and offices are closed on Monday, May 29th in observance of Memorial Day. We'll see everyone back at school on Tuesday.

A Visit With a Rocket Scientist

Hundreds of students at Emerson and Franklin got a first-hand look at the wonders of what goes into a job with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration - NASA.

Joe Noto, a Propulsion Flight Controller & Flight Operations Directorate at NASA's Johnson Space Center, shared his job, what he's learned, and how he got there. Noto said he became interested in astronautics and aeronautics in middle school.

The presentation covered what NASA is, what they do, and Artemis. Noto was there in person for the Artemis launch and got to work in Mission Control during the mission. He also showed students what a rocket launch looks like just 3.5 miles from the launch site.

Additionally, Noto shared one of his most important keys to success...active listening.

"If you guys can make sure to actively listen to parents, teachers, friends, cousins, aunts, and uncles, just focus when people are talking and listen to what they're saying. Try to be the best learner you can, and you guys can do whatever you want in life."

Thank You to Our D64 Retirees

The end-of-the-year celebrations continue as District 64 honored 86 staff members who have retired (dating back to the 2019-2020 school year) or will retire at the end of this school year.

Due to the pandemic, we could not properly recognize and thank all those who retired over the past three years. On Tuesday, we invited retirees back from the 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 school years and paid tribute to their commitment to our community. Then on Wednesday, we gathered to applaud the retirement class of 2022-2023.

"That's who we're honoring tonight. The person you decided to be and dedicate to this field," said Superintendent Dr. Eric Olson to the group of retirees and soon-to-be retirees. "Thank you for all the years that you shared yourself with us. Thank you for your commitment to the District 64 students and all you did for them and your colleagues all these years. Also, thank you for choosing this profession and doing the best you possibly could."

You can find a list of our retirees and more photos on our website.

Hendee Rotary Scholarship

Congratulations to our Hendee Rotary Scholarship recipients Julie Chalberg (Field), Nikki Kelsey (Roosevelt) and Jennifer Garofalo (Roosevelt)!

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Park Ridge and the Hendee Family for gifting $1,000 to each teacher to continue their own learning and education.

The $1,000 scholarship is presented in memory of Dr. Raymond E. Hendee, District 64 Superintendent, from 1970 until his retirement in 1990. Hendee was committed to providing teachers with the opportunity to improve their teaching skills by supporting and encouraging programs of continuing education focusing on new teaching techniques and academics.

Round the Bases

It's not every day you get to play kickball with the principals

Carpenter students who were at the top of the Track-A-Thon fundraising got to join Team Balduf and Team Degman for a beautiful afternoon on the diamond.

Not only was there a mix of different grades playing, but also different skill levels. Great sportsmanship and teamwork were displayed while helping some of their classmates learn the game!
