It was Pie Day at Emerson Middle School on Wednesday as part of their fundraising efforts for St. Baldrick's. We are just a few weeks away from the big head-shaving events on March 8th.
The Lincoln/Emerson Baldies have raised more than $300,000 for childhood cancer research. We still need your help to get to our goal!
At lunch, Emerson students who have helped fundraise were drawn to throw a pie at a teacher. Ms. Halfman and Ms. Nguyen raised the most money and got to collect their "winnings," aka a pie to the face!
Ms. Halfman went the untraditional route and opted not to use shaving or whipped cream but instead had a blueberry pie tossed her way.

Ms. Nguyen had not only one but two students throw (gently, of course) shaving cream-filled pie tins at her. What a day!

Age Appropriate Placement
It is District 64’s practice to place students age-appropriately at each grade level upon enrollment. If you have a preschooler at home, please keep the following in mind regarding enrollment in District 64 for the 2023-24 school year:
Students who will turn six before June 1, 2023, will be placed age-appropriately in first grade upon registration, regardless of prior enrollment in kindergarten.
Students who turn six after June 1, 2023, and are not currently enrolled in District 64 may elect to enter kindergarten or first grade for the 2023-24 school year.
The District has adopted a policy for accelerated placement and early entrance procedures. In these cases, a student may be placed at a higher grade level. More information about this may be found on the District 64 website.

On Thursday, District 64 held a Newcomer Night, and it was an excellent opportunity for families in our community who have been in the country for one year or less.
Dozens of families attended the event and built a deeper understanding of the English Learner Program and friendships with other Newcomers from across the District.
It was invigorating to see all the fun and connections made. So many of our staff helped make this a successful evening. One of the many examples of support was Vera Andronenkova, a Teacher Assistant at Emerson Middle School, translating to/from Ukranian to ensure parents got all the information!
Thank you to everyone for participating.

Boxes & Boxes of Donated Lunches | | |
|
|
The Carpenter Cougars donated hundreds of lunches to Uncle Pete’s Ministries this week. In total, 300 lunches were brought in and were later distributed to those in need throughout the Chicago area.
Students and families were asked to collect sandwiches, hard-boiled eggs, bags of chips/pretzels, fruit, cookies, and bottled water.
The recipients of these lunches were “very grateful to be remembered in such a special way,” the organization wrote to all the Carpenter families who helped and donated food.

There’s never a shortage of smiles when our furry friends with Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy stop by the Jefferson Early Childhood Center. Multiple times a month, a group of therapy dogs and their handlers go to Jefferson for different activities.
This week's activities included students rolling jumbo dice and counting out the numbers they rolled. Each number had a corresponding “trick” for the dog to perform, like “shake” or “lay down.” Another exercise was counting necklaces and putting them on a dog to display proudly.
“Dogs are non-judgmental, kind, and patient listeners while children are given unconditional respect and new confidence in their activities,” according to Rainbow’s website.
This is just one of the many highlights of the Jefferson program! Here are some more pictures from this week.
