Board President Mike Borkowski stated that District 67 has a clear Vision and Mission, with six milestones defined to keep the district on track. He noted that the Vision encompasses a combination of many important areas, including financial oversight. He stated that the Board is devoting a great deal of time to reviewing capital projects to ensure the responsible use of taxpayers’ dollars. Mike underscored a sense of urgency and focus in achieving the Vision. He concluded his remarks by thanking the Superintendent, Administrative Team, teachers, staff and fellow board members for their efforts and support in achieving this goal.

Superintendent Mike Simeck thanked Andy Duran and LEAD for their partnership and support of a variety of projects. He encouraged parents to attend the Rush Neurobehavioral Center’s presentation discussing Executive Functions and the Teenage Brain on February 2, from 7-9pm, Administration Center, LFHS West Campus. Mike also announced that the district would be participating in the Comprehensive School Climate Inventory (CSCI) in March. Students in grades 3-8, all staff, and all parents will be surveyed to provide an in-depth profile of our schools’ culture and climate strengths and needs. Lake Forest Schools and LEAD are planning a book discussion and movie viewing relating to Most Likely to Succeed by Tony Wagner on March 1, 7-9pm, LFHS East Campus.

Professional Development Report

Assistant Superintendent Rebecca Jenkins provided an overview of the Professional Development opportunities offered to district staff. Teachers shared how a variety of professional development offerings had impacted them, personally and professionally, as well as the influence on the work of teaching and learning in all of our schools. Rebecca commented that investing in the staff is ultimately an investment in our students.

Jeff Folker reported that the committee reviewed a revised draft of the proposed policy addressing the kindergarten fee waiver language for academically at-risk students. The committee will meet again in February for further review and discussion. It is anticipated at least two policies will be presented to the Board for a first reading in February, Organization and Instruction (6:30) and Kindergarten (6.90).

Board Operating Procedures
|
|
Jeff Folker reported that the committee had completed its initial review and editing of all sections of the draft of the Board Operating Procedures Manual (BOP). The committee projects it will have the BOP Manual ready for Board review and approval in April.

North Shore Special Education District (NSSED)
|
|
Suzanne Sands overviewed the NSSED Leadership Council’s professional development efforts, including information about closing achievement gaps and providing comprehensive instructional programs for all students. She reported that the Leadership Council and member district superintendents are targeted to begin strategic planning this summer. Suzanne also provided information about the upcoming NSSED budget draft, Center for Independent Futures Meeting, work of the NSSED Policy Review Committee, and information about the North Shore Academy Elementary Program. She stated that she will be attending the upcoming NSSED Advisory Committee meeting to discuss the Rubloff building, its current state and future direction.

Beth Clemmenson reported on the Governor’s upcoming State of the State address. His speech has been released to the public. Beth read the ten long-term goals the Governor hopes will be addressed this term. Beth commented on what we might expect to see in the future. According to ED/RED, we could anticipate talks about a proposed property tax freeze, potential shift in pension costs, and some modification to the need-based system for state aid. She stated that she will look to ED/RED as a guide and continue to monitor and provide information as to how the budget will take form in the upcoming months.

Association of Parents and Teachers

Jeff Folker recapped the January Executive Board meeting and announced that the Annual meeting will be held March 8 at CROYA, 9am. The Nominating Committee will present the slate for 2017-19 officer candidates in February for a vote at the annual meeting.
