A Message From Council Member Bazaldua

I hope everyone is having a great week!

Thank you to everyone who joined our meeting this past Tuesday to discuss the Winner’s Tower revised plan. There are plans to hold one more community meeting before the project returns to City Council for consideration. Your continued input is critical as we move forward.

Here are the remaining meetings for the month of April:

• April 6 – Zoning Meeting: Discussion on the Winner’s Tower Project at 1709 MLK Blvd
• April 14 – Community Meeting: Proposed Senior Multi-Family Development at 2825 N Buckner Blvd
• April 16 – Joppa Community Town Hall
• April 18 – Queen City Community Walk & Beautification Event with City Manager Kim Tolbert and DPD Chief Comeaux
• April 21 – Streetcar Community Meeting focused on connecting Fair Park to Downtown

Yesterday, the City Council unanimously approved the addition of Dolores Huerta Day on April 10th and removed Cesar Chavez from our official holiday calendar, where it had previously been marked alongside Labor Day observances. This is an important step in ensuring our city’s recognitions more accurately reflect the contributions and history of our communities. We are also beginning the process of renaming Cesar Chavez Blvd, which will impact our district. To ensure community voices are heard, we will be conducting a public poll to help determine the new name. We strongly encourage everyone to participate once it is released.

Additionally, we will soon be launching our 50/50 cost-sharing program in partnership with the Transportation Department. This is a great opportunity for residents who have sidewalks in need of repair. Please keep an eye out for more details on how to apply.

Lastly, we encourage everyone to stay engaged, attend upcoming meetings, and continue sharing your feedback. Your involvement helps shape the future of our community, and we appreciate your ongoing support.

Step Up Dallas Community Walk & Beautification

The City of Dallas invites residents to participate in the Step Up Dallas Community Walk & Beautification Day, a volunteer event focused on keeping our neighborhoods clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone.

Community members of all ages are encouraged to join in as we walk the area, pick up litter, and help beautify the neighborhood. Even small efforts can make a big difference when we come together as a community.

Street Car Community Meeting

Big conversations are underway about the future of transportation in Dallas—and your voice is essential.

District 7 Construction Notices/Updates

The City of Dallas is moving forward with an important infrastructure project to improve wastewater service in District 7. A contract has been awarded to SYB Construction Co., Inc. to replace a wastewater main along portions of Biloxi Drive, Lewiston Avenue, and Noweta Avenue, beginning southeast of Bluffcreek Drive.

Project Timeline

Construction is expected to begin the week of April 6, 2026, with anticipated completion in Fall 2026, weather permitting.

What to Expect

During construction, residents may experience:

• Temporary street closures
• Intermittent disruptions as crews work in phases
• Restricted parking in active work zones

Crews will work to minimize inconvenience and maintain access to driveways whenever possible. Your patience and cooperation will help ensure the project is completed efficiently and safely.

District 7 Items on 4/8 Agenda

Item 7 - Authorize an acquisition from “Environmental Resource Holdings, LLC” for a tract of land with 24.5 acres located on the Lenway x Botham Jean intersection for the Dallas Floodway Extension Project. District 7 Investment: $1, 273,044.50

Item 13 - Authorize a supplemental agreement to the professional services contract with RPS Infrastructure to provide additional construction phase services for the Large valve and Meter Vault Project. District 7 investment: $18,531.53. Improvements being made at Samuell Boulevard Large Water Main Valve Replacement at Samuell Boulevard and Valley Glen Intersection.

Zoning Item 8 - To allow the continued operation of Gold Auto Parts recycling buy back center for 2 more years (passed).

Zoning Item 19 - The purpose of the request is to continue the operations of the open-enrollment charter school with pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. This item has been delayed until the 4/22 agenda to amend the traffic plan along Ferguson Road.

Dallas County Health and Human Services - Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)

Accepting applications for free AC units for qualifying participants, Dallas County does assist with installation of the window unit. WAP also provides other weatherproofing services such as Insulation, Duct work, Weather stripping, etc. A Dallas County representative is on The West Dallas Multipurpose Center campus assisting people with completing their application. Nominations Open: Juanita Craft Humanitarian Awards

In celebration of the birthday and enduring legacy of civil rights leader Juanita Craft, nominations are now open for the Juanita Craft Humanitarian Awards. Established in 2018 by the State Fair of Texas, these annual awards recognize individuals and organizations across the DFW Metroplex who reflect her commitment to civil rights, social justice, and community service.

Born in 1902, Craft was a pioneering activist and public servant whose work helped shape Dallas and beyond. Through her leadership with the NAACP, she organized more than 180 Texas branches, became the first Black woman in Dallas County to vote in a public election, and later served on the Dallas City Council. Her advocacy contributed to desegregation at the State Fair, local schools, universities, and public spaces, and her youth engagement efforts inspired generations of community leaders.

Each year, the awards ceremony honors those continuing her work to create positive change, evaluating nominees based on measurable impact, service, and dedication to addressing community needs.

Submit a nomination:

Applications are accepted year-round. To be considered for this year’s awards, submissions must be received by July 15. Applications received afterward will roll forward for next year’s consideration.
