A Message From Council Member Bazaldua

Thank you to everyone who attended our first of two community meetings regarding Fair Park. If you weren’t able to join us, we have one more meeting scheduled for May 12th at 6:00 PM at Vista Bank. Please come out to hear updates on the future of Fair Park and to ask any questions you may have.

I also want to remind everyone about the Public Safety Response Symposium happening this Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Briscoe Center at Fair Park. This will be a great opportunity to hear directly from city leaders and engage in meaningful discussion.

Yesterday, we held a press conference alongside Representative Julie Johnson and other city leaders to celebrate more than $5 million in community project funding secured for Dallas. For District 7, $850,000 has been allocated for safety and infrastructure improvements along Ferguson Road. Additionally, $850,000 was secured for Fair Park, and $2 million for the Five Mile Creek Trail. We appreciate the efforts from Representative Crockett, Johnson, and Veasey in bringing these investments back to our city.

Today, the City Council will be briefed on the City’s general obligation debt, financial capacity, and the upcoming budget. This is a critical time as we navigate budget constraints and address projected deficits for the current fiscal year.

I would encourage all of our residents to stay engaged and make your voices heard at any of our upcoming meetings or through your neighborhood association meetings.

District 7 Construction Notices/Updates

The City of Dallas is moving forward with an important infrastructure project to improve wastewater service in District 7. A contract has been awarded to SYB Construction Co., Inc. to replace a wastewater main along portions of Biloxi Drive, Lewiston Avenue, and Noweta Avenue, beginning southeast of Bluffcreek Drive.

Project Timeline

Construction is expected to begin the week of April 6, 2026, with anticipated completion in Fall 2026, weather permitting.

What to Expect

During construction, residents may experience:

• Temporary street closures
• Intermittent disruptions as crews work in phases
• Restricted parking in active work zones

Crews will work to minimize inconvenience and maintain access to driveways whenever possible. Your patience and cooperation will help ensure the project is completed efficiently and safely.

Dallas County Health and Human Services - Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)

Accepting applications for free AC units for qualifying participants, Dallas County does assist with installation of the window unit. WAP also provides other weatherproofing services such as Insulation, Duct work, Weather stripping, etc. A Dallas County representative is on The West Dallas Multipurpose Center campus assisting people with completing their application. Nominations Open: Juanita Craft Humanitarian Awards

In celebration of the birthday and enduring legacy of civil rights leader Juanita Craft, nominations are now open for the Juanita Craft Humanitarian Awards. Established in 2018 by the State Fair of Texas, these annual awards recognize individuals and organizations across the DFW Metroplex who reflect her commitment to civil rights, social justice, and community service.

Born in 1902, Craft was a pioneering activist and public servant whose work helped shape Dallas and beyond. Through her leadership with the NAACP, she organized more than 180 Texas branches, became the first Black woman in Dallas County to vote in a public election, and later served on the Dallas City Council. Her advocacy contributed to desegregation at the State Fair, local schools, universities, and public spaces, and her youth engagement efforts inspired generations of community leaders.

Each year, the awards ceremony honors those continuing her work to create positive change, evaluating nominees based on measurable impact, service, and dedication to addressing community needs.

Submit a nomination:

Applications are accepted year-round. To be considered for this year’s awards, submissions must be received by July 15. Applications received afterward will roll forward for next year’s consideration.
