Hi Neighbors,
March is Women's History month!
San José has been a leading community for women at the forefront of our nation’s history. Former Mayor Janet Gray Hayes was the first woman elected mayor of a large city in the United States in 1975. Her leadership, environmental advocacy, and tenacity helped propel San Jose’s national reputation. I feel fortunate to have grown up here in San José, which welcomes female leadership and innovation.
To celebrate Women’s History Month this year, the San José Public Library is hosting a series of events and reading lists for all ages. Let us use the month of March as an opportunity to recognize and honor generations of women trailblazers throughout U.S. history, who have provided countless positive contributions to our culture and society.
I have several community events in the coming weeks, I look forward to seeing you in our community.
Best,

Evergreen School District California Distinguished Schools
Glad to be presenting commendations to schools from my childhood school district at the Evergreen School District Board meeting. We recognized Evergreen Elementary, James Franklin Elementary, Tom Matsumoto Elementary, Carolyn A. Clark Elementary, and Silver Oak Elementary School as the prestigious 2023 California Distinguished Schools Award recipients.
It was a heartwarming and prideful moment; not only have these schools worked hard because of the pandemic, but they have worked hard despite it, and that models dedication from all pillars of our school district!

City Council Update
We are officially in budget season! The Mayor released his March budget message on March 13 based on the focus areas from the five transition committees. The March 21 Council meeting will be your opportunity to be heard.
I look forward to the discussion on Tuesday on the Mayor's priorities and fostering an environment where our entire community can give their feedback and input to ensure we have an equitable approach to our budget.
During our March 14 Council, I wrote a memo directing staff to allocate the remaining $3.2 million in Measure T funding to improve water quality at Lake Cunningham. Although this vote didn't go our way, I will continue to fight and advocate for our community.
Affordable housing is sorely needed to ensure that residents of lower income levels have ample housing options in our City. I also submitted a memo with my colleagues, Vice Mayor Kamei and Councilmember Torres, on supporting staff recommendations on a development that would build 98 affordable units at 797 Almaden. The development passed with unanimous support from the Council.

Responsible Landlord Engagement Initiative
I am delighted to share that the Responsible Landlord Engagement Initiative (RLEI) program is back to helping San Jose residents to keep their neighborhoods safe and healthy. Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County continues to be the host agency of the program. RLEI empowers neighbors to resolve problem properties affecting their quality of life through community building, organizing, and mediation strategies. RLEI helps the residents to engage negligent landlords inviting them to turn into responsible landlords.
The return of RLEI means to the community that they have access to a unique and efficient way to resolve problem properties in partnership with the city's traditional means and resources.

Welch Dog Park Shade Structure in Construction
The Welch Dog Park shade project began on March 6, 2023. The project will include a new shade structure over the seating area within the dog park with tan fabric and black posts to match the existing benches and fencing. Dimensions of the frame are 25’ x 20’ and will shade four of the extant benches near the center of the dog park. The structure will be constructed and completed by early April if all goes well. We are battling the weather conditions, so hopefully, it will be dry enough for the contractor to begin and complete their work!
Closure signs have been posted along the fence line to inform the community and students about the construction!
