District Attorney John Kellner
Our goal is always to seek justice. This includes not only prosecuting criminal cases, but also ensuring that victims are treated with dignity and respect.

We promote initiatives to prevent and deter crimes, and we support rehabilitative programs that address the underlying factors that lead people to break the law.

What's New?
Aurora Diversion Office - Grand Opening

District Attorney John Kellner and Director of Diversion Sarah Ericson spoke at the grand opening of the Aurora Diversion office, 2993 S. Peoria, Aurora 80014 on October 25.

The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office offers an adult diversion program, juvenile diversion, and it recently launched a pilot program for Recovery Diversion for adults. Diversion already has offices in Centennial, Littleton and Castle Rock. Diversion staff include 16 therapists with master’s degrees; 2 case managers; 2 victim advocates; 1 administrative assistant and 1 assistant director under the supervision of Director Sarah Ericson.

In 2020, 40 percent of all juvenile cases were referred into Diversion. Of the youth who successfully completed the Diversion program, only 6.7 percent had committed another offense after one year.

“For many years our office has had an incredibly successful Diversion program, and I have made expanding its offerings one of my priorities. I want more people to have access to the supports they need to end the behaviors that bring them into contact with law enforcement so they can stay out of the criminal justice system. This new office is yet another way to accomplish that.” ~District John Kellner~

Victim Compensation
If you or a loved one has been victimized by a violent crime, the Victim Compensation Program may be able to help. While no amount of money can ease the trauma of a violent crime, Victim Compensation can help relieve the resulting financial burden on victims and their families.

The Victim Compensation program is fully funded through fines collected from adults and juveniles who have been convicted of crimes, including traffic offenses. Awards to victims are made by the Crime Victim Compensation Board of the District, whose three members are volunteer citizens appointed by the District Attorney. This CVC program serves the 18th Judicial District.

Eligibility requirements and financial limitations do exist, and the application and eligibility requirements are below.

People v. Alston

“I cannot think of a more flagrant violation of the laws that hold our society together than trying to kill a peace officer. This wasn’t a robbery when no one was home. This was an invasion of a home when the perpetrators knew people were inside. And those perpetrators brought guns."
~District Attorney John Kellner~

The man who shot and critically wounded Cherry Hills Village police officer Cory Sack during a home invasion robbery was sentenced to 44 years in prison on Oct. 10. Both DA Kellner and Senior Deputy District Attorney Casey Brown were at the sentencing.

Angelo Alston was 17 years old when he broke into a home to rob it. Alston pleaded guilty to attempted murder of a police officer and aggravated robbery.

Data Dashboard
How It Started
“I pledged during my campaign to be open and transparent, and this tool is one step in fulfilling that promise. We are public servants, and the public has a right to meaningful information about what we do. These interactive Data Dashboards provide more information about our operations to the public. I believe this increased access to information will shed more light on the criminal justice process for my constituents.”
