September also brought us our annual Colorado District Attorneys’ Council (CDAC) fall conference. Among the many cases across the state, our team was recognized as the winners of Colorado’s 2022 Outstanding Trial Team. I am immensely proud of this prestigious award recognizing our stellar team of Chris Gallo, Cathy Nevill, Grant Grosgebauer, Colleen Vogel and Matt Hanagan. They were recognized for their tremendous team effort in achieving justice in the 1981 cold case murder of Sylvia Quayle of Cherry Hills Village. The defendant, David Dwayne Anderson, was convicted in June of first degree murder and the judge handed down a maximum sentence for his heinous crimes.
In keeping with our core value of being open and transparent, we kicked off our Citizen’s Academy in-person at our Arapahoe County Office. Our Citizen’s Academy is a community-focused, free 7-week course for our residents. We explore the roles of various departments within the DA’s office and give citizens an in-depth look at what happens from the time someone is arrested all the way through trial and sentencing, including a visit to the Crime Lab (Unified Metropolitan Forensic Crime Laboratory) and our last session wraps up at the Arapahoe County Courthouse.
Our community-focused effort continued with our quarterly town hall held Thursday, September 29 with topics: Data Dashboard and Cold Case Unit. We discussed our newly launched data dashboard, and shared the recent successes of our Cold Case Unit. You can watch our town hall on our Facebook @coda18 and video link is found here: DA18 Town Hall.

Data Dashboard Launch
District Attorney John Kellner spoke at the launch when eight (8) Colorado District Attorneys’ offices participating in a pilot phase, unveiled “data dashboards,” a new publicly-available resource designed to promote more effective, just, and transparent decision-making in prosecution. The dashboards were created through the pilot phase of the Colorado Prosecutorial Dashboards project. The project will next create the tools and infrastructure needed to scale up use of data in DAs’ offices statewide.

People v. Brown
In September, a jury found Kyree Brown guilty of killing Joe and Jossline Roland after the couple responded to an online ad to purchase a car.
The investigation revealed Brown used a fake name to advertise a stolen vehicle for sale on an app called Letgo. On August 14, 2020, Joe Roland replied to the listing and agreed to meet to purchase the car.
Brown drove the stolen vehicle to Southlands Mall to meet with the Rolands. When Joe Roland noticed issues with the vehicle title, Brown pulled out a gun and demanded the couple hand over the cash they brought to purchase the car. Brown then proceeded to shoot five times, killing both Joe and Jossline Roland.
The prosecution team included Chief Deputy District Attorney Garrik Storgaard.
