Dear friends,

This past week of City Council quarterly budget hearings brought forth interesting facts relative to progress or lack thereof year to date on certain initiatives in various areas of City-funded initiatives. We will share more information next week, but it is good to note certain City Departments and agencies' success in filling previously vacant job positions. In the first quarter of 2023, over one hundred positions were filled through recruitment processes at the New Orleans Police Department, the Health Department, the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center, and the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.

In the near future, there should be fewer vacant jobs in City government. Each employment opportunity at nola.gov/jobs is a position that offers health and retirement benefits, a generous number of off days, a generous vacation day package, and stability.

Welcome to the thousands of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. members visiting New Orleans for your 91st South Central Regional Conference. We are pleased to host your organization. Click here for more information about the social services organization.

Monday, April 23 - 27, is National Victims of Crime Rights Week. The most important role of a functioning criminal justice system is to protect the innocent from being victimized by criminal activity. When they are victimized, society has a moral imperative to provide support and resources to the victims of crime. Please click here for information.

Special announcement to The National Crime Victims Rights Week, whose activities and resource sharing will occur on Thursday, April 20, at 3:30 PM, on The Steps of City Hall, at 1300 Perdido Street.

Commendations to the Office of Code Enforcement for remediating blight on 81 overgrown and debris-filled lots in the Upper Ninth Ward area. The strike force did what is always needed in certain areas of our City by cutting the overgrown lots and billing the owners for the cost of doing so.

Our office has worked within the past year to demolish scores of structures successfully and to remediate hundreds of overgrown lots in District D. The work is part of the decades-long plan to rebuild the infrastructure and attractiveness of certain communities that have been marginalized for too long. All people who reside in our City deserve to live in communities that are free of blight and the products of illegal dumping, challenged infrastructure, and difficult-to-travel streets.

Congratulations to Dr. John Nicklow, outgoing Chancellor of the University of New Orleans, on his selection as the sixth President of the Florida Institute of Technology. My District D office appreciates the support that UNO has offered to Voices of the Victims of Crime with the Newman Center access, to our District D efforts for recruiting officers to the New Orleans Police Department, for hosting City related public gatherings, and for providing expanded educational resources and opportunities through, for example, housing the new campus of Edward Hynes Charter School, and much more. We wish Dr. Nicklow the best in his continued work in enhancing education opportunities.

There is much going on in District D, such as discussions of crime reduction, food distributions, ongoing District D public assistance office hours, a couple of movies in the park, a cleanup, a health fair, new business openings, and more.
Sincerely,

Councilman Eugene J. Green, Jr.

WHAT'S GOING ON AROUND DISTRICT D
ROADWORK IN DISTRICT D

Long-anticipated street work is underway on Bayou Road. The businesses along this historic boulevard will benefit in the long run from the resurfacing work and replacement of some bricks and curbs.
Good to see a completed block of repair on Abundance Street that runs in front of a school (St. Leo The Great) and voting precinct (St. Raymond/St. Leo, 7-21) next to a full renovation of a property that was long in disrepair on Paris Avenue.
ILLEGAL DUMPING UPDATES IN DISTRICT D

The Department of Sanitation works to clean up illegal dumps daily throughout the City, producing good work at great cost to taxpayers.

Here is a cleanup in the community of Skyview/Melia and other areas. Please send any photos or videos of illegal dumping vehicles to nola311.org. The City Council has increased the fines, and there is an active effort to seize the vehicles of the criminal dumpers.
There was a huge cleanup on Lakeshore Drive along Lake Pontchartrain on the Monday following Easter Sunday, resulting from work performed by ARC of Greater New Orleans (ARCGNO.org), a non-profit organization under contract to the Lakefront Management Authority. ARCGNO is dedicated to advancing the independence and well-being of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities such as Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and autism.
BLIGHT ELIMINATION IN DISTRICT D

What do children of the Upper Ninth Ward / Florida / Desire communities prefer to see when they leave their homes on their way to school? Scenes like this likely make them more motivated to trust and invest in their City Code Enforcement, City Attorney, and Health Departments, which receive overwhelming numbers of blight elimination, but there were many successes this past year.

SEWERAGE AND WATER BOARD REPAIRS IN DISTRICT D

The Sewerage and Water Board repaired the fire hydrant at Clermont and Gentilly. It is regrettable that it was hit by a vehicle some time ago. There is still some work and clean-up to be installed, but it is good to see that the grass and the roads are dry.
UPDATES FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS ON ABANDONED VEHICLES

The Department of Public Works is working with the Violent Crime Reduction Task Force to remove abandoned vehicles from public lands and streets. The vehicle seen below was removed from the Melia subdivision near UNO. Hundreds of vehicles have been removed thus far in 2023, including many in District D. The thieves and criminals steal and break down vehicles because they fear neither apprehension, fines, nor prosecution.

Please report abandoned vehicles and send photos or videos to nola311.gov
