Dear friends,

Have a good Memorial Day and weekend. Remember the men and women who died in military service in the United States. In addition, enjoy the weekend, including health-related events, a military appreciation event, first responders support, festivals, and more.

We are sending huge congratulations to our high school and college graduates. The acceptance to colleges and receipt of scholarship dollars continues to amaze me.

The Ninth Ward Stadium will be a reality! Congratulations, and thank you to the New Orleans City Council for approval of a total of $2.5 million to supplement federal and state funding support. This investment in the Desire community, combined with the opening of the Desire - Florida Multi-Purpose Center and private sector investment, will aid in rebuilding this historic community.

Thank you to the members of the New Orleans Police Department for timely responses to calls for assistance in cases of violent crime and for investigations that have resulted in arrests in some recent violent incidents. The cooperative work with agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Marshalls Service, the Louisiana State Police, and other law enforcement agencies reduces carjackings and other forms of violence.

No one wants to see people getting hurt and others spending time in prison. More people will likely choose to take advantage of the thousands of jobs available in New Orleans and the many programs that the Cantrell Administration and the City Council have funded that provide recreation and skills development opportunities to youth and adults alike. See the options below.

Take a look at the photos below. The Department of Sanitation dispatched crews daily and on weekends, employing tax dollars to clean up illegal dumps. These dumps are often found under the elevated expressways that run through District D and in areas that are dark and in low-income communities. The criminals who create these dump sites have already been paid for the proper disposal of the waste but have such levels of greed and disdain for other people that they do not take the quick trip to the Gentilly Landfill, located at 10200 Almonaster Avenue. The public’s assistance is requested. If you see anything, take a photo or video. Please call 3-1-1 or send a report to nola311.org. June and July will be pivotal as we try to reduce illegal dumping.
We welcome so many new families and individuals who have new homes under construction and are performing renovations and enhancements in District D. Our office will continue to work hard to address infrastructure issues, facilitate demolitions of blighted properties, and will apply more pressure to owners of overgrown lots to make them either better maintained or transferred to another owner. We’ll work to plant more trees and secure resources for beautification projects. Your investments will be rewarded in the long run.

Working with you to enhance the quality of life in District D and New Orleans is a pleasure. Let’s have a great summer!
Sincerely,

Councilman Eugene J. Green, Jr.

BLIGHT REMOVAL IN DISTRICT D: 4002 VELIE STREET

Thank you to the Department of Code Enforcement for removing the blight at 4002 Velie Street in the Indian Village subdivision. Good work, Durr Construction, whose workers were attacked by swarms of bees who asserted that the long-vacant property belonged to them. Neighbors thanked the work crews and Councilman Green for finally getting the property demolished. Demolitions of private property are difficult due to the laws and attitudes of some owners. Someone should approach the owner about purchasing this vacant parcel and building a nice new house on this lot visible to thousands of I-10 west travelers. Our office is focused on rebuilding, including support for demolition and redevelopment.

ILLEGAL DUMPING ELIMINATION IN DISTRICT D

Thank you to the Department of Sanitation work crews for cleaning up illegal dumping sites under the elevated expressways and in low to moderate-income communities. Tax dollars are hard at work. These dumpers must be fined and punished, with the seizure of vehicles and increased monetary fines made possible by the City Council. Visit nola311.gov if you see anything or know anything. The number of cameras will increase, and Sanitation Rangers are on the beat, but your help is needed. This is a 24-hour-a-day problem.
