Dear Residents,
I am pleased that our office and the city's office of code enforcement continue our quest to remove blight from our neighborhoods. This blight is demoralizing to nearby residents and hinders investments and confidence in the respective communities. Our latest success is the demolition of 2537 Frenchmen Street. In addition, with the support of the City Council, a demolition was conducted at 2131 Elysian Fields Avenue.
I am pleased that on Thursday, June 9, the City Council took steps leading to the appropriation of the funds that will support the relocation of the residents of the Gordon Plaza subdivision. On the campaign trail, I pledged to the residents of this community that I would prioritize their requests for a fully funded relocation.
I am actually angry when I consider that there was a time when it was allowable and even encouraged for families to build new homes and reside on top of a landfill that includes toxic chemicals and garbage. The relocation of these residents, who live in my district, is long overdue and is of priority. The relocation is a moral imperative.
On Wednesday, June 15, the City Council will consider an ordinance that defines a category of operation of a motor vehicle that endangers the lives of participants, spectators and the general public. I encourage those who block intersections with "donuting" to recognize that doing such violates both city and state law. There are so many fun activities in New Orleans that don't include reckless behavior and intimidation of others.

NEWS FROM THE JUNE 9 CITY COUNCIL MEETING
During its regular meeting yesterday, June 9, the New Orleans City Council moved forward with formal contempt of Council charges for Administration officials involved in the "Smart Cities" project, appropriated funding to address manpower shortages within the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), voted to create a new review group for domestic abuse fatalities, authorized a series of amendments to the Classified Pay Plan, and adopted two resolutions pertaining to Entergy New Orleans, including its application to reconfigure electric service to the Sewerage and Water Board (SW&B).
The Council also addressed development concerns within Louis Armstrong Park, took steps to facilitate repairs of damaged traffic signals, approved an amended Cooperative Endeavor Agreement (CEA) for the continued restoration of damaged infrastructure due to Hurricane Katrina, and affirmed its commitment to cross-agency collaboration to provide much-needed support for New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

Join my office for a Neighborhood Engagement Meeting, face to face, here in District D on Saturday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m in the Mosquito, Termite, and Rodent Control Board Building at 2100 Leon C. Simon, across from UNO.
Blight is being tackled in a big way by my office, with many successes thus far. However, there is much to be done, with years of work needed. There will be presentations during this meeting, on top of scores of residents present, with not enough time for all individual questions to be raised at the mic. So bring your specific concerns in writing, preferably on a 5x7 card, and leave them with the respective department representative.
There are thousands of lots and properties in District D, so I highly encourage you to jot down your concerns regarding specific overgrown lots, blighted properties, street lights, and other safety-related quality of life issues. Even if you've filed with 311 or have been in touch with Pierce.Huff@nola.gov in District D, bring a card. We will have cards on-site to fill out, but we recommend coming prepared. DEMOLITION AT 2537 FRENCHMEN STREET
On Friday, June 3, our District D office received another big demolition victory. The property on Frenchmen Street required some meticulous shoring and bracing. It was termite-infested and had no bottom floors. The elderly neighbors were so appreciative that this property had been taken care of, and my office looks forward to removing more blight in our district.

- Both Sides of St Ann Street 1600 Block from 7AM June 8 - 7PM June 13.

- They will also be clearing some of the parking lot area under I-10 for shots from 3PM June 9 - 12PM June 11.

1850 BLOCK OF N. MIRO ST. TO REOPEN BY MONDAY, JUNE 13
Starting on June 6, the 1850 block of N. Miro St. between Annette and New Orleans streets was closed to vehicular traffic while crews fully reconstructed the roadway with a new eight-inch water main. Traffic has been detoured to Elysian Fields Ave. and then onto N. Claiborne Ave. Flaggers have been onsite to direct drivers and pedestrians.

FREE IMMERSIVE STEM PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 6-8 AT DILLARD UNIVERSITY
Dillard University is partnering with Verizon and the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) to offer the Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers program, which is a free project-based STEM learning program for middle school students.
Participating students will receive mentorship, access to next-gen technology, and hands-on training. The initiative provides engaging programming where sixth to eighth-grade students can learn design thinking, 3D printing, augmented reality and social entrepreneurship. The program was designed to create a more diverse pipeline for future careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields; no prior knowledge or experience is required.
This program is a three-week in-person session from June 27 to July 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., located in room 342 of the Professional Schools Building (PSB). Food will be provided, as well as transportation in varying locations for participating students. To register, click here. NEW ORLEANS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
The Deep South Center for Environmental Justice (DSCEJ) in collaboration with CLEAR Environmental, is now accepting applications for the Environmental and Climate Justice Storytellers Collective Internship.
High school interns in New Orleans will partner with regional experts in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine (STEMM) and environmental and climate justice organizations to chronicle stories of vulnerable communities adversely affected by climate change and environmental hazards.

Historic New Zion Baptist Church celebrated its school graduates on Sunday, June 5. Councilman Green was honored to deliver the sermon at the request of Dr. C.S. Gordon, Pastor. New Zion is the ground on which Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other leaders founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957.
