Dear friends,

Today, Friday, June 2, is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. On this day and over the weekend, volunteers, nonprofit partner organizations, cultural organizers, and a series of landmarks and buildings will honor the ninth National Gun Violence Awareness Week. The weekend, June 3-5, is Wear Orange Weekend. The Day, weekend, and month are dedicated to honoring the lives taken and forever changed by gun violence.

Click here for more information on Gun Violence Awareness Week focus.

The impact on victims of gun violence is tragically profound. The goal of this motivating period includes: creating an environment that fosters support for victims of gun violence, providing and supporting services that enhance intervention and prevention, and supporting communities and individuals who are plagued by gun violence.

Too many people in our City have experienced pain and loss due to individuals using guns incorrectly and to hurt others. During this time, remember the victims of crime, and let us all support efforts to make our communities safer.

Thank you to the members of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), Emergency Management Services (EMS), and the Orleans Parish Communications District for responding quickly and well to a recent incident in the Pontchartrain Park subdivision involving semi-automatic shots fired and injury. An elderly woman, terrified by shots fired at her house that wounded her daughter, was instructed by EMS to stanch the bleeding. She was comforted by the rapid arrival of multiple units of NOPD officers who responded quickly after the incident. The quick responding EMS team got two victims stabilized and quickly transported to a hospital.

One day, we will experience less violence in New Orleans. However, it is important to recognize the important role that first responders play in securing our communities and scenes that would have much worse results than for their intervention.

On a more positive note, please be advised that hundreds of summer jobs have already been filled by youth and that over 1500 NORDC summer day camp positions have been filled by New Orleans youth. In addition, as you can see below, there are still many activities with which youth can get involved this summer. Pools are opening next week, and the private sector is hiring young people. Here’s wishing all youth of New Orleans a safe, enjoyable, and productive summer.

Thank you to those investing in the many new houses and businesses under construction and opening in District D. We see you and appreciate your investments. In response, we work every day to facilitate the improvement of infrastructure. Progress is being made.

Residents are welcome to attend, and the many neighborhood associations of District D are encouraged to have representation, at the Neighborhood Engagement Roundtable meeting on Saturday, June 24. Representatives of the Department of Public Works and Sewerage and Water Board will be present to share plans and to explain ongoing operations. Much has been done, much is being done, with much to be done.

It’s going to be a busy and productive summer.
Sincerely,

Councilman Eugene J. Green, Jr.
