Dear friends,

Happy Labor Day weekend! Labor Day honors and recognizes the American labor movement and laborers' work and contributions to this nation's development. However, Labor Day weekend reminds me that there are still at least 900 vacant job positions at the City of New Orleans and thousands of vacant jobs throughout the metropolitan area. Positions at the City pay health and retirement benefits. What a contribution toward enhancing public services could be made by filling these jobs with motivated people. Visit Nola.gov/jobs to join the City’s labor force. Take the civil service examination, and share the info.
Earlier this week, I spoke to a gathering of citizens in memory of Orin Grant, Jr, a twenty-year-old man who played the drums at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in McDonoghville (Gretna). His father, Orin Grant, Sr., is the pastor at St. Paul and a motivated, community-building-minded person. Unfortunately, Orin Jr. was murdered, leaving to his parents and the community the memory of a young man with extraordinary talent willing to share them with others. There is so much that can be said, but it is essential to remember that there are no excuses for the actions of those who use violence to intimidate and hurt others. The violence must stop, and society must use whatever legal tools are available to make our citizens safer from threats.

In addition, thank you to those who invest in their new home construction in the District. These beautiful new homes deserve to be in neighborhoods free from criminal activity and enjoy the provision of robust public services. We are working in District D daily to enhance the quality of life for all in the communities you have invested in. Again, thank you, investors and homeowners.

Lastly, a significant amount of activity is taking place in District D. Check out the images below to learn more, including next week’s peace march, Ochsner's health fair, Night Out Against Crime and much more. October also marks the return of the Treme Festival, the Gentilly Festival and the Fried Chicken Festival.

Have a great weekend and a happy Labor Day.
Yours, very truly,

Councilman Eugene J. Green, Jr.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Councilman Green addressed attendees at the Stop the Violence Rally at Israel Baptist Church in Harvey. The rally was called in memory and celebration of the life of Orin Grant Jr. who was recently murdered at the age of 20. Reverend Dr. Orin Grant Sr. is pastor of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in McDonoghville and is pictured here in a white commemorative shirt. We extend our condolences to Pastor Grant and his family. Such disregard for human life, as exercised by so many who commit criminal acts, must never be viewed as inevitable or excusable.
Councilman Green recognizes Mrs. Jennifer Greenwood for 17 years of service as chair of the women’s ministry at Mount Kingdom Missionary Baptist Church, located at Johnny Jackson, Jr. Blvd. in the Desire/Florida Community. She was honored during the church's celebration of Women's Equality Day.
