Dear friends,

This weekend, we celebrate the birthday and national holiday dedicated to the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This can be a time of reflection on the service that we can offer to our fellow human beings that will enhance the quality of life for ourselves and all in society. Note below the activities that are taking place this weekend.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a social activist and Baptist Minister who played a key role in the American Civil Rights Movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968. Dr. King fought, through peaceful protest, for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged, and all victims of injustice. Dr. King was the driving force behind watershed events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the 1963 March on Washington, which helped bring about landmark legislation such as the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. Rev. Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

In 2023, three District D streets were renamed due to Ordinances that I introduced and were supported unanimously by the members of the City Council. In addition, the renaming garnered widespread support from the graduates of McDonogh 35 High School, now at 4000 Roneagles Way, at George Washington Carver Senior High School (now located at 3059 Carver Rams Way), and at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO), (now located at 6400 SUNO Knights Drive).

In 2033, the Louisiana Department of Education announced that District D's John F. Kennedy High School and George Washington Carver High School were ranked among the top ten most improving schools in the State. The University of New Orleans (UNO) welcomed a new President, Dr. Kathy Johnson, an accomplished career educator who happens to be the first woman to lead the UNO in that capacity.

So, amid challenges in 2023, there was significant forward movement in City Council District D. New businesses, employing many; crime reductions, new opportunities at educational institutions, significant residential blight reduction (not enough), the opening of new churches construction on a new school, completed infrastructure street with more started, and much more to do in 2024, educational institutional successes, scores of new housing starts, relocations of long-suffering residents, and more. The glass is more than half full, and we have to thank the many hard-working public officials and citizens who are investing in and focused on improving things.

Have a very prosperous and healthy year. There is much to be done, and much is getting done in District D and our city.

Sincerely,

Councilman Eugene J. Green, Jr.

STREET ENHANCEMENTS & REPAIRS IN DISTRICT D

There are nearly 75,000 sewer drains/catch basins in New Orleans. We extend our gratitude to residents who contribute to removing leaves, pine needles, and trash from the surfaces and entrances of these drains. This collective effort significantly reduces the likelihood of flooding in the immediate vicinity and throughout the surrounding community.

The comprehensive street work being undertaken diminishes the risk of street flooding and fortifies the infrastructure, thereby reducing the necessity for near-term repairs. Stretches are completed each month, contributing to ongoing improvements.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: INTERMITTENT LANE CLOSURES ON ST. ROCH AVENUE AT NORTH VILLERE STREET

The Department of Public Works (DPW) construction contractor, Command Construction Industries, LLC, began utility upgrades on North Villere Street, requiring temporary lane closures on St. Roch Avenue at North Villere Street through Friday, Jan. 19, 2024. During this time, the parking lane will be closed, and vehicle traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction.

Public safety is our top priority; signage and traffic control measures, such as barrels and fencing, will be onsite to direct drivers and pedestrians. DPW asks residents to adhere to 'no parking' signage on the streets. Vehicles parked in these zones will be ticketed and towed. This work is expected to be completed by the end of the day on Friday, Jan. 19.

This temporary disruption of services is part of the $18.5 million St. Roch Drainage Upgrades joint infrastructure project with DPW and the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO).
