FREE, High Quality Preschool Coming to Denver Harbor
Council Member Cisneros is pleased to announce that Houston's first Bezos Academy in the region will be located at the Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center! Bezos Academy is a Montessori-inspired preschool, fully funded by Jeff Bezos's personal philanthropy. Bezos Academy will offer full-day, year-round programming free of cost to eligible families. Keep an eye out for more details on the Bezos Academy launch, which is slated to welcome students in Fall 2022.
February is Love Your Pet Month
Council Member Cisneros' annual Love Your Pet initiative provides free resources to District H pet owners and promotes responsible pet ownership across Houston and Harris County. This year Council Member Cisneros is partnering with the Houston Humane Society, BARC, the Empty Shelter Project and Houston PetSet to host healthy pet events and free spay/neuter opportunities all across District H throughout the month of February.

Summer Jobs Alert! Hire Houston Youth Launches for 2022
All youth ages 16 to 24 in the Houston area can apply for paid jobs and internships in many kinds of industries, non-profit organizations and businesses as well as City of Houston government. Visit https://hirehoustonyouth.force.com/s/youth-registration to apply. The program gives young people an opportunity to learn or build their job skills, network, and earn a paycheck.

Applications Now Open for TechConnect Summer Internships
TechConnect is an initiative created by Council Member Cisneros to provide hands-on STEM activities to District H youth. TechConnect Interns work with Park Campers aged 6-13, and lead STEM activities at neighborhood Park Recreation Centers. Applicants for internship positions should be within 16 to 24 years of age, and desire to serve neighborhood residents by providing support and access to technology and multimedia resources. Though it is not a requirement, preference is given to District H residents. Apply through the Hire Houston Youth site.

Montie Beach Park was the site this year for the City's 36th Annual Arbor Day Celebration, where residents and volunteers planted 750 trees last weekend.

This time of year through mid-February, is the ideal time to plant trees in Houston. Check out this handy guide for planting trees, created by the Houston Area Urban Forestry Council.

Flores Library Reopened after Repairs
Flores Library in Second Ward has reopened to the public following a closure to conduct building repairs. The library is now open for normal hours. Check out the schedule here.
Houston Leads the Nation in Efforts to End Human Trafficking
Houston is the first city in the country to enact a comprehensive plan to combat human trafficking in the metro area. The Mayor's Office of Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence released their five year impact report.

2100 Memorial: Hauling Debris & Traffic Flow
Demolition of the 2100 Memorial Senior Housing Building is almost complete! The process of hauling away the debris from the site began earlier this week and will continue through early March. Hauling trucks will travel north on Hemphill and then west on Lubbock to access Sawyer.

COVID Vaccination Incentives
People who get their first dose or booster shot at eligible City of Houston Health Department vaccination sites will be entered into drawings for $1,000 gift cards. The incentive program runs January 29th through March 10th, 2022.

There are two vaccination sites within District H that will offer the incentive program:
  • La Nueva Casa de Amigos Health Center, 1809 North Main St. 
  • Northside Health Center, 8504 Schuller Rd. 
Leonel Castillo Community Center Offers New Art Program
Local artist Charles Washington is working with young artists on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Afterschool Engagement Program at Leonel Castillo Community Center. The center provides safe, engaging after-school programming for 6 to 13 year-olds. For more information, call 713-274-2222.

METRORapid Inner Katy Corridor Project Public Meeting #3
METRO plans to develop a new METRORapid bus line I-10 between Northwest Transit Center and Downtown with a future extension to the High-Speed Rail terminal.
Join the live virtual meeting next Monday to learn more about the METRORapid Inner Katy Project and ask the project team questions.

Carnival Day Tomorrow in Near Northside

Frost Bank is hosting a Carnival Day at the Near Northside Financial Center on Fulton Street. The event will feature food and drink, games, face painting and other fun activities. Carnival Day is free and open to the public.

Harris County Elections Meeting this Saturday
Harris County will host a Virtual General Community Meeting to discuss the Nov. 21, 2021 election, upcoming primary elections, redistricting and
