Childhood and Youth Committee Updates
|
In addition to the recently announced new partnership with Bezos Academy to locate a tuition-free, Montessori-inspired preschool at the Denver Harbor Multi Service Center, the City of Houston and Bezos Academy have announced three additional new preschool sites that are slated to open in Fall 2022: Community Family Centers in the East End, New Hope Housing at Reed Road, and San Jacinto College North Campus.
All four schools will offer qualifying Three- and Four-year-old children a high quality, full-day, year-round schedule, with meals included. More information and an application to the lottery-based selection process will be posted at www.bezosacademy.org once the school opening dates are set.

Repairs to MKT Bridge Expedited
|
Plans to repair MKT Bridge, which connects the Heights Hike and Bike Trail over White Oak Bayou, were approved by the City. Repairs will begin in March, with a completion date in late Summer 2022. The current detour will remain in place until construction is complete.

YMCA Achievers Club helps teens set and pursue high educational and career goals. The club helps teens to raise their academic standards, develop a positive sense of self, build character, and explore diverse college and career options. Teens can register here.

The Houston Health Department's incentive program continues: People who get their first dose or booster shot at eligible vaccination sites will be entered into drawings for $1,000 gift cards. Vaccination and testing at health department-affiliated sites does not require proof of residency, citizenship, or insurance. Site locations, schedules, and appointment information is available at HoustonHealth.org or by calling 832-393-4220.

Organizations can Register for Summer Food Service Program
|
The 2022 Summer Food Service Program, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department, provides meals for youth aged 1 to 18. Churches, apartment complexes, learning centers, schools or other nonprofit groups can participate by applying for the Summer Food Service Program no later than March 11, 2022.

Early Voting Starts on Monday
|
Early voting in the Democratic and Republican primaries runs from Monday, February 14 until Friday, February 25. Harris County registered voters can vote at any polling location in the county.
This Thursday, February 10 from 4:30-6pm, the Houston Commission on Disabilities is leading "An Accessible Elections Townhall," a Zoom webinar on how all Houstonians can cast their vote in upcoming elections. Register here.

Low Cost Internet for Eligible Households
|
New federal benefits can reduce internet costs for eligible households. The Affordable Connectivity Program partners with internet providers, such as AT&T and Xfinity, to reduce monthly internet costs by up to $30/month. Visit the ACP website to learn more about the program and benefits.
