Celebrating Black History Month
Happy Black History Month! And a shout out to Independence Heights, the first African American municipality in the state of Texas. Descendants of the founding families are leading efforts to protect the heritage and promote the rich history and culture of the first black city in Texas. Learn more here.

This Saturday, there will be a Black History Cultural & Arts Expo featuring an art gallery, pop up shops, entertainment and food. The expo runs 2:00-6:00pm at 461 W Parker Rd.

Also, check out events and live entertainment happening at Black History @ Avenida Houston, every Saturday in February, 1-5 pm on the Plaza at Avenida (between the GRB & Discovery Green). More info here.

Additionally, Houston Public Library is holding Black History Month events, including author talks, book clubs, movies, workshops and more.

Childcare Updates
Join Council Member Cisneros for the Childhood and Youth Committee meeting next Wednesday to learn about the new partnership with Bezos Academy that is bringing a new childcare center to Denver Harbor.
There will also be a presentation on recommendations for the City and County to collaborate and improve accessibility, affordability and quality of childcare.

A Master Plan for Eastwood Park
Join the upcoming virtual meeting to review community input collected on proposed improvements to Second Ward's beloved Eastwood Park. Memorial Park Land Bridge Tunnel Preview Party
This Saturday, there will be a free event celebrating the Land Bridge and Prairie project in Memorial Park. Attendees will have the opportunity to walk through and explore one of the tunnels before its opening to vehicular traffic. The event also features music, food trucks, and giveaways. Vaccine Incentives
Don't wait to take advantage of the Houston Health Department's incentive program. People who get their first dose or booster shot at eligible vaccination sites will be entered into drawings for $1,000 gift cards.

Make a Difference in Your Community!
The deadline to apply for the upcoming session of Complete Communities University is Friday, February 11, 2022. During the 8-session virtual course, participants will explore civic engagement techniques, leadership development, city and county governments, and community resources. Access the application at www.houstontx.gov/neighborhoods and click on "Complete Communities University."
Bicycling Safety Survey
Change Happens and Houston Bike Plan are asking Harris County residents to complete a bicycling safety survey. Survey results will provide input to support future bike programs and initiatives across the region. English survey link here. Spanish survey link here.
