December 2025

From the District President

Dear Friends in Christ,

Slow your mind for a moment, please. Try reading this Christmas hymn without thinking or humming the melody:

“Silent night, holy night!

All is calm, all is bright

Round yon virgin mother and child.

Holy infant so tender and mild,

Sleep in heavenly peace,

Sleep in heavenly peace.” - LSB 363

The words without the music sound empty. It is difficult to read the words without hearing the melody in one’s mind. And of course, the style of the melody often compliments the message of the text. With words like “sleep in heavenly peace,” we would not expect to sing a thunderous melody such as the melody we sing with the hymn “Thy Strong Word.” The sweet melody we associate with “Silent Night” complements the text and helps carry the meaning into our hearts.

Here’s another example. What type of melody would you expect to sing with a hymn containing the following phrases:

“Saved us from the wily foe.

Forcing Satan to surrender,

Breaking all the powers of hell.

From the bondage that oppressed us,

From sin’s fetters that possessed us,

We, the captives, now are free.” - LSB 375

The hymn’s author writes with passion and takes us to the cross of Christ, even with the words of the Christmas hymn cited above. Paul Gerhardt, the beloved German hymn writer, does not lead us to the manger simply to confess that the Savior has been born. Gerhardt leads us there to rejoice in knowing that the One to whom we raise our voices has delivered us from sin, death, and the power of the devil. If it were not so, Christmas would have the life-impact of a candy cane. Gerhardt knows Christmas is about rescue, redemption, and the joy of salvation. He knows firsthand the price of confessing it and the utter devastation and depression one faces without it. The Gerhardt family house and possessions, and their church were destroyed in 1637 during the Thirty Years’ War. He was forced to leave his church position in Berlin for refusing to deny Christ’s real presence in the Lord’s Supper. Four of Gerhardt’s five children died in infancy, and when his wife died in 1668, his sole surviving son, Paul Friedrich, was then six years old.

Gerhardt’s tragic life-circumstances help us understand why he wrote with such care about Christ’s mission for us even in a Christmas hymn. But in this instance, “Come, Your Hearts and Voices Raising,” the hymn’s tune does not at first seem to match well with the strong words. Words and phrases such as “the wily foe, Satan, the powers of hell, and sin’s fetters,” seem to require a sure and sturdy melody to match, don’t they? Instead, the original melody assigned to this hymn, the same melody we sing today in LSB 375, is joyful and Christmas-like, not forceful or majestic. It is uplifting, but not robust. Perhaps the sense of the Christmas backdrop of Bethlehem, a baby, and a manger is what Gerhardt wished to convey musically, while expressing poetically the impact of God’s grace and mercy. Christ arrived to cover and to conquer our sin and death, and thereby secured all the reason for our Christmas joy and peace.

Were the following words of the Psalmist on the heart of Paul Gerhardt at the time of Christmas, maybe especially at Christmas?

“Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,

and he delivered them from their distress.

He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death

and burst their bonds apart.

Thank the LORD for his steadfast love,

for his wonderous works to the children of man.” - Psalm 107:13-15

Merry Christmas to you and to your families. Nancy and I look forward to seeing our children and grandchildren, and I have the honor of preaching on Christmas Day. Come, your hearts and voices raising!

NWD Ministry Planning Teams

Bringing Christ and His Word to people is the mission of the NWD. It is what every Christian organization is about, including our NWD congregations and schools. The NWD has established working teams to focus on the five strategic areas of the NWD Ministry Plan, listed below. The teams are meeting together for the first time on Monday, December 15 to get to the heart of what we can accomplish. The agenda for the day will include a time for all attendees to rejoice, learn, dialogue together, and to begin work in their respective groups. The five areas include:

  • Fostering Lutheran Education
  • Building Families and Children of Faith and Character
  • Freeing Them to Live in His Image – to Serve
  • Revitalizing our Smaller Congregations
  • Helping Them Reach the Lost

Please pray for the work of these servant leaders.

Church Worker Gathering Held

On Thursday, December 4th at St. Mark's Lutheran in Wausau, District President Shoup spent a half day with the non-ordained, non-teacher called workers of the NWD. This gathering included called DCEs, DCOs, DCMs, DFLMs, DPMs, and Deaconesses no matter their specific ministry responsibilities. The day included an overview of the mission/vision of the NWD, a closer look at the vision pillar Building Families and Children of Faith and Character, and a sharing of both best practices and ministry needs. We give thanks for these workers and their service to the church.

NWD Stewardship

Below is a graphic of how the NWD stewards the undesignated congregational income sent by churches. Your gifts make a difference, helping to do ministry many of our congregations could never do on their own. The mission of the North WI District LCMS is to Bring Christ and His Word to People. Watch for the detailed annual report in February and review the past report on the nwdlcms.org website.

NWD Leadership Events

Lay Leader Training - January 13

The annual NWD Lay Leader Training (for lay members serving on church boards) will be held on January 13, 6-8pm, at St. John Lutheran Church - Pulaski. Lay leaders will spend time with Pastor Shoup and his staff to explore leadership and other key areas to help lay leaders serve effectively in their role. Registration is open under Events and Info at nwdlcms.org or directly HERE.

NWD Team Ministry Workshop - January 22

This annual event is for ministry staff and will be held January 22 from 9am-3pm at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church - Wausau. The theme for the day will be family ministry. President Shoup has designated building families and children of faith and character as an emphasis in the NWD triennial ministry plan. The event will be led by Rev. Dr. Todd Biermann, Executive Director at Concordia Center for the Family. Pastor Biermann will help explain an effective family ministry framework for our world today, as well as explore tools and resources available to support your ministry to families. Pastors, DCE/DCO/DCM/DFLM, Deaconesses, and principals are encouraged to attend, but even teams of one can participate in this valuable event. This Christmas, bless a kid you love with a Y.I StewardAccount

Advent greetings to you in Christ!

Starting our precious children down their stewardship path early can make all the difference. Whether celebrating a new addition to the family or creating a lasting legacy for your grandchildren, the Y.I. StewardAccount is a meaningful Christmas gift and an impactful way to invest in their future.

You can start a Y.I. (Young Investor) StewardAccount with a minimum investment of $25. It grows at a premium interest rate (currently 3.042% APY) with your young investor, building both their savings and their financial responsibility. Perks come along the way, with opportunities to earn extra dollars for community service and good grades. By age 16, your young investor can explore the freedom of a debit card and online account access (with custodian approval).

Additionally, high school seniors with a Y.I. StewardAccount can apply for the Take Heart Scholarship each February, giving them another step toward a bright future. This scholarship celebrates their next educational chapter by encouraging them to reflect on their faith, share their unique perspective and embrace the future with confidence. Awardees receive financial support for further education, with awards of $3,000, $1,000 and $500.

More details and an application for the Y.I. StewardAccount can be found here. The peace of the Lord be with you this Christmas!

Newsletter and Logo Changes

For over ten years the NWD has had multiple newsletters to engage more members with the areas they are most interested in. Much of that content has become repetitive and many of the readers have subscribed to more than one of those NWD newsletters. This month we're sending out one electronic newsletter. Starting in January 2026, that new newsletter will have a different look, but still share the important news members want to see from the NWD: the District President message, Across My Desk notices, Ministry Corner items, Ministry Plan updates, and other important information and notices from the District and Synodical level. Also, the NWD logo has changed many times over the history of the district, the last change coming 13 years ago. The new logo will be shared in January, something fresh and meaningful, focused on our mission to bring Christ and His Word to people.

2026 LCMS Convention Assessment

Synod has now shared most of the information each district needs to create the congregational assessment for the triennial LCMS Convention, held in July 2026. The assessment covers the cost of attendance for the 37 NWD members chosen to attend. Congregations will be invoiced by the North WI District LCMS later this spring, using the communicant member number reported to Synod during their annual gathering of statistics at the end of 2024 or the last year you reported them, not including the current year. For budget planning, the number per communicant member will be $2.85. Please contact Lori at the NWD LCMS office with questions at lori@nwdlcms.org.

Mission Grants

The NWD provides annual mission grants to support the outreach efforts of congregations, to help proclaim the Gospel to non-Christians. This year $46,000 was distributed to 34 different NWD ministries. Watch for a new round of mission grants opening in spring of 2026.

Labor of Love Grants - Last Chance to Apply!

The North Wisconsin District Labor of Love grants are for rostered church workers, both full time and part time, employed in NWD congregations, schools, or missions. They are limited to individuals with at least $10,000 in combined educational debt and will assist in repaying college and/or seminary educational loans (excludes post-graduate work or that beyond an M.Div.).

The annual application process opened on Sept. 15, with an application deadline of Dec. 10. Recipients will be notified via email in early January regarding their specific award amounts.

Grants and amounts will be awarded based on the applicant’s overall financial need, current financial commitments, special circumstances, and the District’s availability of grant funds.

Apply HERE.

Ministry Focus Worker Grants

MinistryFOCUS is an LCMS RSO that provides Historical grants to called church workers to reduce debt. There is a general application for called workers and an application for the limited Ministerial Excellence Fund for ordained workers and deaconesses. Applications can be found online at ministryfocus.org. MinistryFocus determines eligibility for the respective funds. If a pastor or deaconess applies for but does not receive an MEF grant, he/she is eligible for the Historical grant. Applications are open by late November and due by the end of December 31. Grant decisions are announced toward the end of January.

Small Church Clarity

Congregations receive God’s love and mercy in worship. Pastors craft sermons to bring Christ and His Word to their people. Pastors and their members sometimes also feel like they are treading water or know they want to move forward but are not quite sure what to do. Small Church Clarity (meaning congregations with up to 200 people per week in worship) is a four-week event that will lead congregations to develop and implement a plan for ministry. A cohort of churches is beginning in the spring of 2026. We give thanks for our partners at LCEF for leading the training, and the NWD Board of Directors for providing the funding to cover the cost. Consider participating in the next cohort. Contact President Shoup or Bill Jordan with questions.

Family Discipleship Facilitator Training

Concordia Center for the Family, a Registered Service Organization of the LCMS, is uniting homes and congregations in making lifelong disciples of Jesus. Through foundational training events, Family Discipleship Facilitators are being equipped and inspired to strengthen the marriages and families served by our LCMS congregations and schools. CCF wants YOU as a Family Discipleship Facilitator! This training opportunity is for called and commissioned leaders of LCMS congregations and schools, along with lay family ministry leaders. Find out more about our 2026 trainings HERE. Also consider CCF's Faith & Life Survey tool to assess how well you're serving families. Find out more HERE.

The North WI District will cover half of the cost of the survey and half the cost for two people from a congregation for the FDF training, until designated funds are spent. Those seeking to register for the training or the survey should not use the online links, but contact Matthew Knehans at matthewknehans@concordiafamily.org.

Hearts for Jesus – LBT

Lutheran Bible Translators is a recognized service organization of the LCMS, driven to empower local leaders who are ready to translate the Bible into the language their communities understand best—so God’s Word can bring hope, life, and transformation to every corner of the world. LBT will be our Hearts for Jesus designee this school year. Many of our NWD schools, Sunday schools, and church groups use the month of February to support Hearts for Jesus, while some ministries pick another month during the year. LBT has multiple videos, chapel services and other curriculum items prepared for our NWD ministries to promote the ministry. Check out our NWD page with LBT at https://lbt.org/nwdheartsforjesus.

MinistrySafe

We are blessed to have another 3 year agreement with our friends at MinistrySafe. Through December 2027 any NWD ministry can provide sexual abuse awareness training to its staff and volunteers at NO COST, thanks to the generosity of the NWD Board of Directors. Contact DJ to get started.

Church Work Scholarships Thank You

25 applicants recently received over $175,000 from NWD endowed gifts to pursue professional church work through our Concordia University System and seminaries! Below are excerpts of a note of thanks from Lorelei S: I want to personally extend my sincerest thanks to you for your generous support in my theological studies. Your kindness is truly a blessing to me personally and has made a tremendous impact on my theological journey. Because of your generosity, I can focus fully on my deaconess studies here at Concordia Seminary, and I am excited to see how the Lord guides me in these coming years. I cannot express how truly grateful I am for your support. Thank you for your care and help!

2026 Requests for Seminary Graduates (Ordained) or Vicars

Congregations that are considering applying for a seminary graduate or a Vicar should contact the President's Office for additional information. The deadline for all applications is February 27, 2026. Please add this to your congregational voter's meetings for consideration so that you can complete the necessary documents in a timely manner. If your congregation is considering an Associate Pastor and would like to request interviews at either seminary, your requests need to be made by January 1, 2026. For more information, please contact Lori - lori@nwdlcms.org or 715-845-8241, ext. 103.

Calling from the Field

Often a commissioned worker or their district will contact us to share names of workers looking for a change. Most often those are teachers, principals, deaconess and DCE’s. We do not vet the list but will share those names with a call committee chair or ministry staff person. Contact DJ for help as you plan your search process.
