District Seeks Input on Ludlow Community Playground

The Shaker Heights Schools are seeking input on the planned community playground at the Ludlow Early Learning Center. Ludlow neighbors and interested Shaker residents are invited to the Ludlow Community Association meeting on November 20 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Ludlow Room at the Shaker Heights Public Library, 16500 Van Aken Boulevard. To RSVP, email bhsu@ludlowcommunity.org.

Review of Woodbury Campus Design at November 13 Board of Education Meeting

At the November 13 Board of Education meeting, the project architects presented a preferred site design for the Woodbury Campus. As the schematic design process has been moving forward, the architects have been busy gathering input from Board members, Facilities Advisory Committee members, Woodbury neighbors, PTO Presidents Plus leadership committee, City leaders and staff, and other stakeholders. Residents are encouraged to review the presentation and provide feedback or submit clarifying questions at info@cobaltgroupinc.com.

Woodbury School Visual Preference Survey Live Through December 5

In addition to providing feedback on the site design for the new Woodbury Campus, the design team is seeking input into the exterior design of the project. Residents of all ages are invited to rank their preference for the “look and feel” of the exterior design of the new Woodbury building. The architects are specifically interested in understanding the community’s preference for how the architecture of the main part of the Woodbury building (circa 1918 and which will be renovated) blends in with the academic, auditorium and natatorium spaces to be constructed.

Hundreds of survey takers have responded and students are lending their help to get the word out. The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee members will be encouraging Middle and High School students and their families to respond to the survey before the survey period closes. Residents of Shaker Heights will be invited to participate in the next edition of the city-wide e-newsletter, which will come out in late November. The Visual Preference Survey will be extended to December 5 to accommodate this publication’s schedule. Please forward this email to family, friends and neighbors to encourage them to participate!

District Leadership Convenes Sustainability Work Group

Board of Education members Heather Weingart and Doug Wang and Superintendent Dr. David Glasner convened a working group to develop a broad-based, long-term Sustainability Plan for the Shaker Heights Schools. Emerald Built Environments will be guiding the work group through this process and also will identify immediate opportunities for sustainability presented by the implementation of the Long-Term Master Facilities Plan. Additional members of the work group include Facilities Advisory Committee members Lynn Lilly and Christine Medvedev, Woodbury Neighbors Group liaison Geoff Wilson, Doan Brook Watershed Partnership Executive Director Mo Drinkard, and Nature Center at Shaker Lakes President and CEO Peter Bode. The first activity of the work group in December is to participate in the Eco-Charrette for the LEED certification process for the Woodbury Campus. Regular updates and opportunities for involvement in the development of this plan will appear in this update.
