Onaway Water Line Replacement
Over the next six days, contractors will be at Onaway Elementary School and on Woodbury Road to replace a deeply buried leaking water line servicing the Onaway school building. The line will be replaced from the building to the street due to its age and condition. The water will be turned off after the end of the school day today (Friday, November 22). Contractors will be staging equipment to begin work on Saturday. No neighbors will be impacted by the water shut-off.
Once the water line break was confirmed, the District’s Facilities team worked quickly to define the scope of the replacement project and communicate plans to affected staff and stakeholders. Plans to minimize disruptions to the hardscape at Peter’s Garden and impact on small trees and plants were made in partnership with staff, the District’s certified arborist and the Garden’s founding donors. The Ohio Utility Protection Services (OUPS) placed utility flag markers in advance of the construction project. Please do not disturb or remove these flags.
District Seeks Input on Community Playground at Ludlow Community Association Meeting
Board of Education Members Pam Scott and Doug Wang joined Assistant Superintendent Jeff Grosse at the Ludlow Community Association meeting on November 20. Over two dozen members convened at the Shaker Heights Public Library to receive an update on the building’s renovations and evolving plans for playgrounds at the Ludlow Early Learning Center. A new, accessible PreK playground will be ready for use when Ludlow opens in Fall 2025. In addition, an updated site plan for the community playground for older children was shared.
Earlier this week, representatives from the District talked with City officials and agreed to explore constructing the community playground for older children next to the PreK playground (rather than in the front of the building). The District will start by assessing the working condition of storm drains that service the recreation field and evaluate the process and cost to relocate the backstop of the ball diamond further west. Neighbors also asked for traffic circulation plan details for when the newly renovated building opens. The District will return to the next meeting in 2025 with additional information and project updates.
Woodbury School Visual Preference Survey Live Through December 5
Now through December 5, Shaker Heights residents of all ages are invited to rank their preference for the “look and feel” of the exterior design of the new Woodbury building. The architects are specifically interested in understanding the community’s preference for how the architecture of the main part of the Woodbury building (circa 1918 and which will be renovated) blends in with the academic, auditorium and natatorium (swimming pool) spaces to be constructed.
Please forward this email to family, friends and neighbors to encourage everyone to participate! Click here to take the Woodbury Visual Preference Survey.
Woodbury Campus Site Design Evolves with City Input
The project architects presented a more detailed version of the Woodbury Campus preferred site design at a monthly working session comprised of representatives of the City Planning Commission/Board of Zoning Appeals and Architectural Board of Review. A wide range of topics were discussed, including the massing of the building, exterior materials and a schedule to facilitate project approvals in 2025. As the schematic design process continues to move forward, the Facilities Advisory Committee and Woodbury Neighbors Group will meet for a joint meeting on December 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the Shaker Heights Public Library, 16500 Van Aken Boulevard, to provide another round of feedback.
