Changes to Safe Sanctuaries training requirements
Effective immediately, all staff and volunteers who work with children, youth, and vulnerable adults will be required to renew their Safe Sanctuaries training every five (5) years in order to remain in compliance. This is a change from the current minimum standards. The new training requirement is designed to ensure that everyone serving in Upper New York ministries remains equipped with current best practices for creating safe, welcoming, and nurturing environments.

Calvary UMC: Latham continues to be collection site for Red Bird Mission Shoebox Ministry
Looking for site(s) in Adirondack District
Please see this from Dave Alexander, who organizes efforts to transport shoeboxes to the Red Bird Mission in Kentucky:
Our team of people from the Endwell UMC is gearing up for this year's collection of shoeboxes and other new items for the Red Bird Mission in Kentucky.
We are looking for drop-off sites in the Adirondack District where churches can drop off their collection of shoeboxes and other items for pickup by our team. We will pick up all donated items and transport them to Endwell UMC where they will be shrink-wrapped.
We would like to accomplish this during the time period of Tuesday, Nov. 11 through Wednesday Nov. 26. Our two 26-foot trucks are being packed on Saturday, Nov. 29 for travel to Kentucky on Dec. 1.
Please contact Dave if your church would be willing to be a collection site.
Email address: dave3836country@gmail.com Phone: (607) 743-7786
Calvary UMC, 15 Ridge Place, Latham, a collection site in the Albany District for years, will begin accepting shoeboxes and new pillows, new full- and twin-sized sheets and new blankets and new towels in the near future. Organizer Cecilia (Cece) Broomhead is asking that all donations be delivered to the church by Nov. 3.
Look for details in next week's newsletter along with a detailed letter from Dave Alexander with instructions on packing the shoeboxes and descriptions of appropriate items to pack.

District Superintendent
Rev. Debbie Earthrowl
posts a daily devotional on Facebook
Click here to view today's devotion. Debbie continues to read through Genesis - Chapters 33 and 34. Chapter 33 is the story of the reconciliation between Jacob and Esau. We read how the person who possesses good reason for revenge and who has the power to carry out an act of revenge takes the initiative to lay aside his grievances to resolve the tension. A good lesson for all of us ...
Read through the New Testament with Rev. Bill Mudge
Debbie is also sharing Rev. Bill Mudge's daily readings of the New Testament. He will do this every weekday in 2025 and by the end of the year if you follow along, you will have read the entire New Testament. You can also visit Bill Mudge's Facebook page to join along with the readings by clicking here.

The Rev.
David Smith's
Photo Devotion:
Flawed but Valued
This Day Lily certainly has its flaws but its color at the beginning of an Adirondack trail was on this Summer day was a source of great joy for me.
It is easy at times to be captivated by the physical and/or inner beauty of an item or individual despite their flaws. Unfortunately, it’s also easy to allow a person’s flaws to prevent us from seeing their inner and/or physical beauty. Ultimately, we need to look for that within them that is a true reflection of the fact that they were created in the very image of a loving God. Sometimes though, God’s image within them is hidden beneath anger, greed, or envy and can only be revealed by their encountering the power of God’s love.
God has the power to unlock that the divine in even the seemingly hopeless. In the hymn “Amazing Grace” by John Newton we hear of how God’s redeemed the Captain of a Slave Ship. In his words: “Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.”
That Amazing Grace in the person of Jesus Christ that gave John Newton forgiveness and new direction that led to him becoming a Minister is available today to all who seek it. You can read about it in the Bible and hear it proclaimed in Faith Communities. It is a precious gift free to receive and share with others.
“Flawed but Valued” was taken in the Adirondack Mountains along Putnam Creek on 7/1/2025.
I have done more than 1,800 Daily Photo Devotions, most of which can be seen on my blog Daily Photo Devotions (wordpress.com).
Shalom,
David E. Smith, Pastor
