Special Education Teacher Following in Mother’s Footsteps

Katie Abbott fondly recalls tagging along with her mom as a kid, watching her support students as a special education teacher. Now, 20 years later, Abbott serves students as an Alternative Curriculum Program teacher for the Integrated Learning Program.

“I realized, like my mom, I could positively support students,” said Abbott.

Abbott enjoys taking her students to job sites, workshops and day programs for hands-on learning experiences. She originally wanted to be an FBI agent and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. After returning for her master’s degree, she knew the classroom was where she was meant to be.
