June 23, 2022

To our School Community,

Chagrin Falls Schools takes any issue regarding student and staff security very seriously. On June 13, 2022, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed House Bill 99 into law. When this law takes effect on September 12, 2022, it will give local school boards the authority to allow school district employees to be voluntarily “armed within a school safety zone” as long as that employee complies with training requirements, which are yet to be determined but “shall not exceed 24 hours.”

At our meeting last night, the Board of Education reiterated that the Board, Administration, Chagrin Falls Education Association (CFEA), and Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE) agree that we will not amend our policy to authorize staff to be voluntarily armed. Law enforcement personnel, including the School Resource Officer, will remain the only individuals authorized to carry firearms in school safety zones.

Sincerely,
